anyone had any real success in cleaning and re-treating the waterproof shell of the above type jacets?
I've got a TNF summit series jacket which is absolutely fantastic in terms of weight / pack size vs warmth but unfortunately there is no beading effect in terms of water being repelled off jacket and as its light and dark grey the light grey appears to have dirt / staining on it. recommendations gratefully received - albeit not looking to take it to dry cleaners as I'd rather put that sort of money towards a new jacket especially as I don't hold out that I'll get the sort of finish I'll be pleased with. many thanks, caterham. |

I believe nikwax do a tech wash solution that is designed for just this job. Google them.

By definition of the material used for the outer shell, it isn't ever going to be waterproof.
Pertex is wind proof and highly breathable, but will never be more than water resistant for a short period, unlike Goretex, porelle, sympatex etc, which all offer porous breathable, and waterproof membranes , which are then laminated , with taped seams , to a selection of materials that a given brand has chosen for its outer fabric. Companies like Grangers and Nikwax all do safe washing products for technical garments, using pure soap , which has no detergents in them , therefore will not strip the DWR ( Durable water repellant ) bead coat from the garment. Never wash them with normal washing liquid nor ever use fabric conditioner, which strips DWR coats very quickly, plus the fabric conditioner works by attaching its smellyness ( is that a word  ) to the fibres, which then reduces breathability and water/vapour transportation.
Have a look at these products, there are specific products for washing Down garments, and also reproofers to restore the DWR coats on garments , simply through washing them in the product. Most replenishing products also improve in performance if you can apply heat post wash, either through tumble drying or ironing , check the jackets labels for options. thanks guys.
who's actually used what and did it do a good job in terms of looking cleaner? windowlicker - thanks very much. not expecting it to be waterproof as such but I seem to recall the water did bead on the pertex to a degree but not at all anymore. |

I use Grangers and never had a problem.
I use Grangers Performance Wash for actually washing the garment (although mine is a synthetic insulation - for proper down you may need their down cleaner) and I have some XT Proofer for respraying when the DWR repellent layer disappears (although I've never used this yet as the performance wash seems to do a good job of retaining it) |

As an addition, I have a "hard shell" which is basically a fully waterproof Gore-Tex jacket, like a Kagool which I will wear over my insulated jacket if it is going to be bucketing it down - the water-repellancy of down jackets is more for getting caught out in a quick shower than withstanding prolonged hammering
Take a look at Arc-Teryx stuff - pricey but top notch |

Washed my rab hydrophobic down jacket in the nikwax down wash stuff. Did the trick.
Biggest PITA was the faffing about needed to redistribute and seperate the down in the jacket as it clumped together into lumps in the washer, time and patience were both needed. Much better since I washed it, has revived the breathabilityof the fabric, and water once again beads on the surface in a light shower. |

Nikwax tech wash for cleaning then use Nikwax Down Proof to make it waterproof. Nothing better in my opinion and believe me when I say I have tried them all For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Nikwax then tumble dry with a couple of pairs of shoes. The shoes bash into the jacket and separate the down and stop it clumping. You could also use tennis balls for the same effect.

think Gore-tex is overrated though most of mine leak  |

I've quite a collection of waterproof clothing and reproof them all on a regular basis. I've never had much luck with Grangers and now always use the Nikwax products. Neither products are cheap but the Nikwax at least are very effective and have never let me down providing you follow the instructions to the letter in terms of washing technique and quantities of the product used. Personally I don't like down jackets as I preferred the layered approach so have no experience on their care but my money would go on Nikwax
I started with nothing and still have most of it left! |

Nikwax and Paramo waterproof gear. Had Paramo waterproof smock that have used every day in the winter for about 10 years its a bit tatty like me but is still waterproof...Its been treated with Nikwax proofing products and the water just runs off...
