The strangest thing Ever! on my Puma
Hi,

Im Raul Ruiz from Dominican Republic, I bought a 2010 Land Rover Defender 110 Puma Engine a bout a month ago.

I don't know why but my defender some times, when i hit the brakes or put the directionals on it goes off suddenly! Only when is neutral or with the clutch on. it has happened to me like 5 times since i bought it, sometimes it just happened when i start the engine, sometimes running.

I have talk with some mechanics and the land rover house here in Dominican Republic, and they have never seem something like that before. Im taking my defender to the mechanic next Monday, to see if they can find something.

I want to know if some of you have experience something like that or know what i can do to fix it. It will be much appreciated im going nuts to find what is happening, because dosent make any sense.

I made a little video of what is happening to me, so you can a have a clear vision, because i know is very strange. Here is the video Link

If anyone could help me, i would be very glad.

Thanks

Hi Brian,

Thank you alot for your answer. No, the engine doesn't die when i press the clutch. The engine die when i press the brake or when i press the turn light (these is with the car on neutral). That's why is so strange because the brake doesn't have any link with the engine so the turn light. It happend to me again today i have a video when i press the turn light and the engine dies. Do you have any ideas what can be?

Do you have whatsapp number, i will like to send you the videos, so you can have a clear view of what's happening, because i know its hard to understand because doesn't make any sense.

Thanks a lot

I expect Lorryman will come up with an answer as he is a wiz with these things.

However with my limited knowledge, could it be an fault on the lighting side hence why it happens when using the indicators and brake. I would start by checking all the earth connections around the vehicle (starting with the rear lighting) and all the relays and connections under the seats, the fuse box etc. There was also a service note for the main harness rubbing on the gearbox and chaffing the wires have a look in that area at the main looms. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

When he puts his foot on the brake pedal the Defender engine stops....?

I don't know what the answer is, but Blackwolf is good with things like this.

It's not related to that problem when a brake light bulb has gone and it makes the Defender do odd things is it?

If I understand the OP correctly, the problem is that if he is stationary on tick-over and either presses the brake pedal or turns on either L or R indicators, the engine stops.

If so, this is an exceptionally wierd fault. There is an input to the ECU from the brake pedal switch, which is used (possibly amongst other things) to suppress the throttle pedal input after a few seconds if the brakes are applied whilst driving (try drying out the brakes after a river-crossing by the traditional left foot application to see what I mean - after a few seconds the engine drops to tickover).

However the fact that the indicators also cause this problem makes it very strange. I'd be looking for an earth fault first, then maybe pulling supply fuses and seeing if it still happens (which might help differentiate between a short and an earth fault).

Are there any stored DTCs that might give a clue?

I suspect that this may be almost impossible to diagnose remotely via the internet, but my first thoughts would be to focus on the rear lighting circuits and the wiring round the ignition switch.

Has the vehicle had any wiring modifications?

I reckon it's an earth fault too, or likely to be.
It can create all sorts of problems like when I had the rear earth strap loose and when indicating the whole dash would flash like mad, I mean everything.
Indicate left and the brake lights would come on etc.

It's likely the earth path taking the wrong route or possibly a live short but if it was live it's likely a fuse would blow unless it's very low voltage leak thus affecting ECU.

Has it been in water at all? Anything got wet or a leak?

Have you installed LED directions indicators bulbs or brake bulbs? Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Just some thoughts on where to look.....
First of all, I wonder how the indicator can be connected to the brake pedal. Operating the brake, closes the brake light circuit.
Two places where the brake (light) circuit and the indicator circuit are close to each other, are in the wiring loom running back under the rear tub (to the rear lights) and at the loom for the tow hitch. Could the two functions be connecting up (shorting out) somehow?
Do you have a tow hitch? Is the socket faulty, or wet inside?
Do the indicators light up dimly or whatsoever, with the brakelights, or the brakelights with the indicators? Bad earth symtom, often occuring on trailer lights.
Still haven´t got to why the engine would cut out, but maybe some sort of voltage spike or drop is enough to cause that. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Tow sockets can get mud and water in and corrode at the back which could short the brake and indicator together but I don't know if this would shut the engine off. Underneath the right hand rear wheel arch is a plug to unplug the tow socket so it would be easy to disconnect this to rule out the tow socket as the problem. Ray

Hi Blackwolf,

Sorry but I’m not very familiar with the words you use, I’m kind of new with my landy, I will like to learn all the terms, but can you tell me what is ECU and DTCs?

No, I don’t think it has any wiring modifications, but I have a winch, I don’t know if that could cause that.
