Strange Noise on Starting
Hi

On my 2.4 2010 puma I sometimes get a "grrrr" noise when I start the car. It happens after the car has fired and only lasts less than a second.

Is it the starter motor failing or the ignition switch not disengaging quick enough? 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP

Sounds like a lazy or broken return spring on the starter motor ring gear I think... Question YOLO... You Only Live Once...

There was a TSB at one time concering a recurring fault with the ignition/starter swtich, which on some vehicles was failing to disengage the starter when the engine started resulting ultimately in the destruction of the starter motor. Although I think it was pre-2010, it might be worth checking.

As far as I know, the starter is inhibited by an "ENGINE RUNNING" output from the ECU, so it is possible that the switch is keeping the starter running until the ECU has had time to figure out that the engine has starter and inhibit it.

Or it may just be a sticky solenoid, of course!

Does the ABS system sometimes make a noise on starting?

I've noticed this on mine.

We only got the car on Friday so just getting used to all the various noises and rattles and working out which ones are normal and which ones need looking into.

It feels to me like the ignition switch isn't returning back to its correct position after starting. In fact I have to move it back a bit myself.

The Grrr noise sounded like the starter to me but I wasn't sure.

Does anyone have a link to the TSB mentioned ?

Cheers ---------------------------------------------------------------
