It wasn't easy to find an anodiser to do it actually. The problem seemed to be the size of the components. A large firm in Huddersfield had a minimum order of nearly £400 so that was a no go. A smaller firm said it would require a full production run unshared with any other components and therefore quoted a similar price. Eventually Colour Anidising in Manchester came up trumps. They did a great job and it really does look like new.
It was a lot of chasing around but I think we'll worth it in the end, especially as now the plates on the steps are black as well. 2002 110 td5 |

I saw earlier in your thread that you had the side runners galvanised. Presumably you drilled out the rivets to remove the tread plate and rubber packing piece?
Did you use ordinary pop rivets when refitting? Have they squashed the rubber a bit? I'm wondering about getting my new runners powder coated to hold back the rust a bit. No three year warranty for me as I bought them second hand. I fitted rivnuts instead and just tightened the bolts (countersunk Allen) until they started to compress the rubber. They were quite fiddly though due to the curved surface of the step. The original rivets were fitted with spacers to avoid crushing and distorting the aluminium.
To be honest, the only reason for doing this was to replace the silver chequer plate with black. The side steps were the originals from 2002 and had cavity wax applied. There wasn't a spot of rust on them and the powder coating had also lasted well. I had them galvanised because it was almost free to do due to the minimum weight policy my local galvanisers have (100kg if I remember correctly). 2002 110 td5 |
