Right then let's move to the 6" speakers right at the back.
Alpine SPR-60's http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-...-27161.htm Again these were a carful choice. I wanted as big as I could get away with without making the install look like a bodge! After a bit more careful measuring I was certain that I could make it work. Yes, if you follow me then you are going to hack your rear quarter panels but when you consider they are circa £45 to replace that's not really a big hardship even if you decided to return your Defender to standard. The other key factor was reducing any rattle so the panels at the rear were carefully sound deadened and the actual plastic panels had some off cuts of Dynamat applied too. The results are very good with only the loudest of tracks causing any rattle (and I'm talking seriously loud!). In fact the speakers themselves will distort ahead of any panel rattle. As the pictures below show you need to carrfully cut away the ribs in the panel. Not too hard to do with a dremel and finished with a needle file. Unfortunately these two pics only show the work in progress, I think I lost interest in taking pictures after this!! 
It is though a tight fit and you need to measure at least twice! The finished result is perfect and there is no sign of any cutting, bodge or DIY. I'll try and take a couple of pics and update this thread.  Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Right then, the last peice of the jigsaw.......
In my tests I found that the sound was just not "filling" the cabin in the way that I wanted. Now, I've got to be honest that I received a HUGE amount of conflicting advice on this part. Many said "it won't make any difference" and "don't connect two sets of speakers in parellel you'll get poor results". I guess this point takes me back to my first first sentences, we all have differing ears! For me I am completely happy, it's a huge improvement. The amp also drives this configuration with ease and is designed for the load it's getting. http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-...-27163.htm So what I did was get a set of 5" Alpines from the same range SPR-50's (link above) as the 6" rears and then set about testing the best position for them. Eventually I settled for immediately behind the front seats. They are built into some custom pods, again made from MDF and this time covered in the same carpet as the floor. You might just have spotted the carpeting detail in the last picture. I was insistant on that panel right behind the seats being carpeted. Oh and neat edge detailing too
Can you see it. No not really unless you're sat in the rear seats (erm, OK they've never actually been sat in whilst the car is moving  ) But I know it's right

I found the R series are a significant upgrade on the G series. Definitely worth the extra money. |

It's good to hear about the trial and error methods of the speakers position behind the seat - I think this is the kick of confidence from all the pictures and explanations that I needed - Thanks! Out of interest, and because this bit wasn't clear to a novice such as myself (or i missed it) - do the speakers not move around when driving, or are they fixed in place some how? I have an A-level in wood work (although never used), I think it's time I try to remember how to use a saw  |

No fixings, just a really good fit between the window/side panel and the carpeted floor, to do this you need to match the curve and angle of the panel which is a bit of a fiddle. I just made a cardboard template first. The top and the bottom edge of the enclosure has fabric tape attached which along with the tight fit creates enough friction. They've never moved an inch. |

Very jealous about all the kit you've been able to fit. At the completely opposite end of the scale is it possible to plug a Kenwood KSC-SW11 into the back of the standard land rover head. I have the original radio CD player fitted in my 2011 csw. Thought I'd ask for some advice before buying the sub only to find it won't connect.
