Sill chequer plate gaskets
I apologise in advance if this has been covered however a search revealed nothing.
I am going to fit chequer plate to my sills and wings but am struggling to find 110 sill gaskets.

Any ideas as to where to source them please. Do you even recommend gaskets??

Been discussed many times... Whistle

I fitted checker plate wing top to my 110... bought the gaskets with my intention to also fit.

Complete waste of time/money I thought having done one side!

a: I have drilled holes in my wing tops! So who cares if they get scratched underneath now!
b: The gasket thickness raises the height of the checker plate so it then looks more 'added on' and clumsy
c: The foam they use is not closed cell so it absorbes water like a sponge. I did not like the idea of constant dampness between the ali checker plate and the wing top
d: You can see the gasket under the checker plate... looks 'odd'

So I then removed that gasket and fitted both without. Thumbs Up

Cheers for that. I had a suspicion that the gaskets may have been more trouble than they're worth.

Just to balance this a little more evenly perhaps and based on experience when I removed my CP? Laughing

Decent CP kit will come with all the fixings which are usually countersunk cross head bolts, nuts and washers. It will also come with the necessary gaskets if sourced from a decent supplier. It is I who has used butyl pondliner on numerous fittings to include door hinges, hinge blocks, swingaway wheel carrier, bumperetttes and probably lots of other things I cannot currently recall. Gasket is better than none in my book as it assists in filling any voids and prevents the migration of dirt, grit and moisture between mating surfaces. I also have a tendancy of 'wet assembling' all the fixings with a decent marine grade sealant and wiping off any excess after fitment.

As for sills I would strongly advise the fitting of gaskets, I used a wallpaper scraper to get the crud adhered to the sill underneath off when removing. Mine obviously didn't have gaskets at the time. Sourcing and making gaskets costs very little time or money and I can see no justification for not fitting them. See my post bottom of page 1.

Agree with YOLO, once the panels are drilled who cares?

I just use beads of silicone. If you have ever removed the plates where there HAS been gaskets you'll know how much of a mess it is underneath anyway. 2016 D4 HSE

Yes, like RRUK, I also did use circular beads of silicone around the holes I had drilled before I located the checker plate into position. The thought being to negate the migration of water/crud through the holes. But no gaskets Very Happy ... YOLO... You Only Live Once...

I used to think exactly the same as yourselves until I had to remove the CP to facilitate the fitment of new door entrance strips. What you can't see you don't really care about but any void was completely filled with grit and dirt which had migrated behind. This in itself will retain moisture. I used as mentioned butyl pondliner which is not absorbent and does the job nicely. I got rid of the sills completely in the end by fitting R&T sliders and on removal there had been no subsequent ingress at all. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
