mine was a bit rubbish it got loads better after I had the clutch and transfer box adaptor shaft changed at 11k miles DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

A fluid change makes a good difference, especially when cold.

Yes, I have to rev the same amount to get a smooth change into 2nd, but that's also to give me enough time/momentum for a slow gear change.
Planning an oil change soon as it's got noticeably worse in the recent cold mornings. |

Both mine gave a 'nick' when going into second... more pronounced when cold but still there a bit when hot...
