A decent battery should cope if you keep the engine revs up. If it is going to be a long winch there is nothing wrong with winching for a couple of minutes then be stationary for a few minutes revving the engine to put charge back into battery. On a single battery what you want to avoid if you are solo vehicle is discharging your starter battery so that you can not start the engine if you stall it.

David Bowyer has some good videos on winching techniques. Worth watching.


Snatch block/pulley, gloves and tree strop are all useful.


Most useful thing is probably a bucket load of common sense. SAFETY comes first, learn safe techniques!

hm, I dont quite agree there Brendan. If you halve the amp draw and the load, the motor has less work to do and hence it can actually move quicker than a heavy single line pull. So whilst I understand what you're saying, it's not *technically* correct. I appreciate this is being pedantic Laughing

Hi Mike,
Being pedantic, I did not say you halve the amp draw but reduce the amp draw. In fact double lining does not halve the amp draw, however it does reduce it!

One of the big advantages in double lining is an improvement in safety as there is a reduced risk of the line breaking or breaking something in the winch!

Technically the motor will have the same amount of work to do but the rate of doing the work is decreased!
