Transmission Backlash
How much is normal?

I'm having a strange sense of de ja vu.....

Been on a few long runs recently so not noticed it, but back round town I think things may be getting worse 'clunk wise', but not sure if it's because I've not been doing any town driving recently and forgot what it used to be like.... Neutral

They all develop this after a while, pretty bad really when they managed to get the TD5's right Rolling Eyes

My Puma's have been no worse or better than the TD5, Tdi's, Td's etc I've had before. They've all develop slack after a time. Steve.

My 09 plate has quite a bit of backlash at 9k miles - haven't worked out where it is yet or whether it is a lot of small bits of backlash adding up. Gut feel is that it is in the rear diff crown/pinion (new diff locker and drive flanges on back) or perhaps the transfer box - just guesses as I've not looked at where the play is just yet.

Hopefully will get it sorted under warranty......or it'll probably fail at 3 years +1 day

I need to do some tests to narrow it down and see if there is a warranty claim - mind you with a 2" lift, lockers front and rear LR will be reluctant to pay out on anything that has been touched.

Who could I entrust the work to to set up the tolerances/end floats etc if it were the diff pinion or transfer box and not covered under warranty?

Tests, I'm thinking:
Does it happen in Low Range Y/N;
Does it happen with CDL on Y/N;
Look underneath at the two prop shafts and see which one has the most rotation as the vehicle drive is taken up in reverse then forward etc

Am I on the right track to narrow this down before I put to the dealers?

Dave Ashcroft is a great guy; very helpful, patient etc. I'm sure they'd sort you out.

Mine's gradually getting worse (22k miles at present) - very tricky to get a clunk-free change around town, and it seems to me that there's far more backlash in the rear diff than you'd expect from a newish vehicle (it's much worse than my old RR classic with 150k miles on the clock AND my 1953 80...poor manufacturing? Mines just gone over to 26k and it slowly seems to be getting worse. Aparantly it's 'normal' according to the dealer, but sometimes really does feel as though something is going to go bang soon...

My 2009 Puma 90 got the rear diff replaced under warranty at 8k, started to be noticeably noisy when the car had less then 5k on the clock. Been fine since then, it has a bit more tan 10k miles now.

Apparently, this is not unusual, yet it does not make it normal (!!). If it's the rear diff, I guess you should get it replaced under warranty.

It had a new rear diff a few months back after it rattled itself senseless. It has actually gone bang in the past too, but that was a gearbox fault I think (can't remember off the top of my head).

3rd to 4th gear seems to be the worst though. Or 5th to 6th at about 35mph-ish. Although sometimes sitting in traffic putting it into first will clunk a fair bit and it'll roll forward ever so slightly... Land Rovers eh? Gotta love 'em! Evil or Very Mad

The other likely source are the strained clutch coil springs. Puma 110" SW

I too have the same back lash at 25K miles on an 07 1110. I suspect the rear diff and have just spent £590 in renewing the warantee to cover an inevitable claim in the coming year. That and the 6th gear vibration under full throttle are realy spoiling my enjoyment of the Defender these days.

I'm going to drop into the dealers at some point tomorrow to book mine in as it's getting to the stage it did before it went bang before... I've not got any vibrations in 6th yet though.

It's things like this that give me doubts as to how long it's going to last out of warranty. I can't afford to have the clutch/gearbox/whatever else replaced every 6 months!
