It is part of the chassis. Can you not just clean out the rot and weld it?

Unfortunately it's only the Gearbox X-Member that's bolt in and easily replaceable. |

I have seen a project either on this forum or Landyzone where someone cut out the front cross member and used a length of square hollow section steel to replace it there were lots of pictures and it came out looking very good, it was very heavy duty.I have taken a quick look but I cant find that one but I found the link below if that helps:

tbh, don't think its a weak point, the rear x-member is, coz it gets very, very heavy spray from pretty much all the wheels, the front only gets spray from what is ever in front, at 60 mph it should be 30 meters/90 feet in front...
Don't wanna rub noses in it,but regular cleaning would avoid this,waxoil or not. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5. |

Well mine looks a bit ragged also, remember that when you are out in winter this is getting the first shot at all the muck and salt on the road, took out my radiator last year and it seemed to be made from popodoms, on the bottom half the aluminium had just corroded away with the constant salt spray.
If you look at the links in my first post I don't think cleaning would have helped them much. |

Have to say I haven't really heard of these rotting... my 200tdi has a fairly ropey chassis and is on its 2nd rear x member replacement but the front x member is fine... maybe its all the oil leaks from the engine bay

The front of the chassis will often rot on vehicles used off road as mud accumulates in the dumbirons and the main rails. Could quite easily get into the crossmember too, once it's in there it's very difficult to remove it and then the chassis just rots from the inside.
