And if you are on Islay, you should really take the ferry across from Port Askaig to Feolin on the Island of Jura (mostly sideways as the tide rips through at about 8 knots). The road up the east coast used to be driveable (40 years ago) all the way to the northern end of Jura, and the views of the whirlpool and overfalls of the Gulf of Coryvreckan, but it's gated these days.

There's a guy with a 12 seater land rover and a B&B/bothy at the very north end of the island who will collect you and give you a guided tour though.

I thought a real Scotsman from Ayrshire would prefer to drive the local 'Stonefield 4X4' - it was going to compete with Land Rover for M.o.D. contracts and offer skilled employment opportunities in a place called Cumnock.

On the other hand, I am informed that Scotland does produce key transmission components for the current Defender.

Never been to Islay but I did partake in a whisky tasting tour of Islay Malts - smell the sea and taste the iodine said one expert - very medicinal tasting.

Perhaps worth a detour if we are driving up to Oban some time next year.
