Cuthbert, nothing finger tight.
My tire shop actually torqued the new Dual Tones this spring up to 150Nm, so probably a bit too high as top of my head I still believe the recommended torque setting is 130Nm for those 7" alloys. Where did you read that 7" alloys would also need to be tightened to 170 Nm? Anybody else who can confirm if it is 130 or 170 for those? Eric You never actually own a Defender. The Land Rover security nut (and probably others) can't handly being over tightened, the extra torque bends the socket out of circular and the key thingies no longer grips the nut. Not a problem if you spot it while doing general maintenance but a right PITA if you have a puncture at the side of the motorway and can't get the wheel off. It's worth checking the torque on your nuts every time someone else takes the wheels off and keeping a spare socket.

I had the bent pins removed from a socket where the nuts had been overtorqued and replaced with hardened steel ones for that very reason. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Page 100 of my official 2014 Defender Owners Manual (supplied with the car) clearly states 5.5" Steel Wheels 108Nm 6.5" Steel Wheels 170 Nm 7" Alloy Wheels 170 Nm So it is inconsistent with Blackwolf's quoted figures ....... Maybe LR decided 130 Nm wasn't enough for an alloy or maybe the typist and proof reader weren't paying attention? |

Interesting, figures can of course be revised by LR and this may have happened. LR is also very sloppy with its manuals as far as converting metric to imperial and vice versa - there are many instances in the WSM where the same lb-ft figure is quoted in the same manual section as two completely different and incompatible Nm figures!
A simple modification can greatly improve the performance of the locking wheel-nut key:- Click image to enlarge I do this on all mine now, it is simply a slice from a suitably-sized tube (preferably CDS) which is an interference fit round the outside of the key. Never had one of these fail. Make sure that the OD of the tube still fits the recess in the wheel, though. The nut in the photo had actually split before I repaired it, but has been better than new since. The standard locking wheel-nut key is another of Landrover's least useful products, rather like the locking wheel-nuts themselves really! Guaranteed to slow down the legitimate owner but not the thief! |

I'm so glad neither my Defender nor my car have locking wheel nuts!
As for torque figures, I nip them up with the windy gun then tighten them by hand to as tight as I can get and still be able to undo them. After a bit I check them all. Not exactly scientific! Does it actually make that much difference so long as they don't come off? |

I tighten the nuts on my genuine heavy duty rims with just the wheel wrench supplied. This ensures I can undo them in the event of a puncture with the wheel wrench. I don't know what torque that is but I've never had one come loose.

Just spoke to Hunters LR in Norwich they are saying Heavy Duty wheels in black are £187 EACH!!! that's probably before VAT too!!

Thats for an alloy wheel NOT a steel wheel. I,ve seen the damage missing wheel nuts do to a wheel,the wheel ends up oval,thats if it doesn't end up crossing the central reservation at 60mph acting like a small bomb when it hits something.Your call!!. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5. |
