Can't think of anything that would do that as standard on a truck that old. Any possibility it has an aftermarket immobiliser fitted?

Sounds like a problem with your starter solenoid or starter motor... Cheers, Vincent

Thank you for your answers
The dashboard is not the original one so I'm going to look behind to see if there's not something wrong going on there. And I'm going to check again the starter to be sure that it is working properly Do you think that the issue could also come from the glow plugs? Have a nice day |

Instrument binnacle is really easy to remove. Id pop that off and see if there are any strange looking aftermarket boxes behind...

It should also, I would think, be fairly easy to establish which component is making the noise.

I would say that its the Glow Plug relay..
Relays can make odd noises sometimes when faulty, and can sound almost like a buzzer.. The relay is big and usually mounted on the bulkhead in the engine bay. you'll be able to find it by following the glow plug wire from the engine towards the bulkhead, It should go straight to the relay.. This would explain your noise and starting issue.. This is assuming that the engine is turning over but not firing, I dont think you mentioned if it was a turning over issue or a turning but not starting issue.. Also good idea to mention the engine type etc. I'm assuming its a naturally asperated diesel from the year and it was military. but many people (including the military) have retro fitted better engines since then on some vehicles.. Keep us posted, but have a look at the GP relay! Failing that, have a good listen around and find out exactly where the odd noise is coming from. it sounds like that has something to do with your issue so a good place to start.. they will always give you clues Welcome btw good Luck! Browny My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now |
