Sorry JJ I disagree , admittedly I am a volunteer for a Labrador Rescue charity , but they are no more of a handful than any dog between 1-2 , in fact probably easier than some other breeds .
The biggest problem is the new owners who will not put the work or commitment into a puppy , regardless of breed
Do you homework and invest in time and training , enforce positive boundaries and learn with your dog.

Well I agree with you, in particular the owner is more important than the dog and if you don't put the effort in then you get what you deserve. It shouldn't be under estimated just how much time and commitment is needed to get to a place where a dog is comfortable and happy.

Labs and Borders go hand in hand as they like each others company. Or just have a Border, advantage: small in small out!

Kennel club, don't get me started on them... most of the pedigree dogs I've ever known/owned have developed various serious chronic health problems throughout their lives. A long pedigree of champion ancestors and a KC registration doesn't guarantee good health, far from it!

You only need to look at the aristocrisy to know that selective in-breeding isn't a good idea!!!! Whistle

my concern also, my border collie was bought from a local farm, and I got see the mother, I had no health problems with him. a freind bought a pedigree border and he has hip problems at 3 years old Rolling Eyes

what about a lab, Shocked I don,t want an expensive, disabled dog with problems. can anyone advice a good breeder?

Oops here comes the wife, she doesn,t know yet!!!!! Sorry to hijack your thread Jonno, let me know if you fInd a good lab litter Whistle

As a Lab owner for 10 years plus there is no doubt that they are wonderful dogs.....as long as you put the effort in.

We had a pedigree dog and one from Labrador Lifeline a charity that specialises in rescue Labs of all ages. As a charity they are very thorough in checking that the prospective home is right for the dog in question. Even with 2 other dogs we were given a firm but fair grilling about our attitude and approach to all things canine.

Good luck whatever your decision and remember that you will only get back what you put in.... Thumbs Up

Ever thought of a Golden Retriever - very easy to train and loves being with you and wants to please. Our first dog now 2yr old and great fun every day.
