Spare Wheel Security Chain
Hi Folks,

Whilst I'm waiting for my Defender (2015) I'm toying with the idea of getting a hefty bicycle or motorcycle chain to wrap through the rear door carrier and through the wheel's spokes (Bowler). I'll hopefully sort out a more elegant and secure method in the future, but wonder if anyone uses a chain?
If so, what sort of length? If anyone has any recommendations, they would be most welcome.

A flexible, plastic covered, heavy duty, hardened steel wire cable, or fabric covered link chain, as used for motorcycle security, would be better at protecting your spare whilst adding a layer of security/deterrent to it... Mr. Green  Rog... Mr. Green

I use a bike security device, does the job and can be painted to blend in. All the ugly bits hide behind the wheel out of sight

Exactly my thoughts Smile Any idea how long the chain needs to be?!

Cheers Smile Is it a chain / cable? If so, what length did you go for? Or is it one of those D-type lock things?

It depends on your wheel and carrier design, I have a swing away carrier with alloy wheels.

2 foot should be enough, use a bit of string to measure the required length before going shopping, i went for a combination lock to speed up removal and cut the risk of forgetting or loosing the keys

The bike chains aren't especially cheap ( for a good reason) so why not just invest that money on the elegant solution to start with?

I bought this off eBay and fitted it, looks really nice, I also back it up with 3 locking wheel nuts.

I am confident it can be fitted to a Mantec wheel carrier or similar, it just needs adjustment via the washers for the depth. 2016 D4 HSE

Thanks Smile Don't have the car yet, but was trying to get a head start! I was thinking of a combo lock too.

It's a Bowler wheel on the standard door carrier for now.

I have definitely thought of this approach too, but as I may get a wheel carrier in time, and my DIY "skills" leave a lot to be desired, I figured the chain would be a good start until I move forward with future plans Smile

You don't need to be a genuis by any stretch for this.

It's only drilling 3 holes, even a monkey can do that!

The kit comes with a template that fits over the existing wheel carrier so you can drill the holes in the right place. Simples. 2016 D4 HSE
