Puma gearbox problem
Hi all,

my 2010 Puma gearbox has just begun to lose syncro when changing into 2nd gear.. It snatches and clunks unless I change VERY SLOOOWLY! Has anyone else had this problem? Would changing the gearbox oil help, or do I need to bung something like Molyslip into the box?

Cheers in advance,
PAUL. ... ,-------,

We had that after 6 months and 6,000 miles. Synchromech buttered and gearbox changed under warranty. If it's fading it's not going to get any better. Get it in and changed.

We had the clutch done at 20,000 miles. Now, at 26,000 and out of warranty, the syncro is starting to play up. Already our one shot at goodwill with the EGR, had to replace the brake vacuum pump ourselves....

Why do I get the feeling that the time spent under the bonnets of various cars in my teens and early 20s is going to come in useful?

thanks for the info, much appreciated.

Yesterday while going home, on that long downhill I did the clutch in + shift gears again. This time I noticed that when I put it in 2nd , it seems as if 'something' is engaging, almost like when you are changing gears normally. This does not happen in any other gear, you can feel it's freewheeling all the way.

I took it to Hunters in Guildford, and they say it's fine.. I am not so sure, the bloody thing seemed to know it was going into the dealers, and was OK on the short test drive the mechanic gave it.
As soon as I get 3 miles away, the problem comes back.
Def seems to be the same as NoDo$h and Naks problem. I'm gonna give it another week, and then it's back to Hunters..
Now the fekking thing is prone to kangarooing in 1st and 2nd gear.. EGR issue? It's only done 10,200 miles for fek sake..

that's also LR's standard response over here, f%%% stealers!

What I do these days is take it to my indie mechanic, he drives it around and notes everything that is wrong. If it is something small that can be fixed he does it, else I then take it to LR and tell them what to replace under warranty.

Am also thinking to ask my indie to replace the gearbox oil with something more appropriate to our warmer climate, not sure what crap they put in at Solihull Rolling Eyes

You should not add Moly to the gearbox. Synchros need a bit of "friction" to work properly. There is a service call or whatever is called about replacing synchros. At this point I think the transmission is quite a piece of Censored . Puma 110" SW

Hmm.. Not sure I agree with the "don't add Moly to the gearbox", used it on loads of gearboxes without problems before..

Anyhoo... I called Land Rover Cust Services earlier, explained the problem, and got the very helpful chap to see if there was any recalls that need to be done to fix the transmission.. The only recall specific item was a Q068, supposed to stop the sluggish performance. He also advised me to take the car back to ANY UK dealer to get the gearbox / transmission sorted.

I'll post more when I have spoken to the dealers again. ... ,-------,

Quick update....

Hunters in Guildford gave me the usual BS from a main dealer, ie, it's perfectly normal, and maybe your driving style needs to change.. That comment really pi55ed me off... The Land Rover techy I spoke to says it's not normal.
I've spoken to another dealer, and as my Puma is going in for its first service, I'm gonna get the warranty stuff done in one big lump..
Now the bloody thing has started the dreaded lurching ar 2000 revs... makes me look like a bloody learner driver... Not good...
I'm seriously starting to get p155ed off with it.. Never have I had a car under warranty with so many glaring faults. Yeah, people will say its all part of having a Land Rover.. BS, it's bad manufacturing and quality control.

If it has faults in the first year, what's it going to be like 4 years down the line with no warranty left? ... ,-------,
