Welcome. If you're technical acumen isn't up to it (no offence meant) I may be able to assist as you appear to be local. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Main light switch on left of column has melted. Very common occurence!
If you move the switch to the side and tail position you may get side and tail lights back, in which case as an emergency measure you can short out the two wires connected to the dim-dip resistor (just under the RH wing top near the aerial) which will give full dip beam whenever the sidelights are on. Permanent solution is to rewire the headlights through relays. |

Thanks K9F, I will give it a look myself in daylight conditions but failing that I'll be in touch, appreciate that.
Cheers Blackwolf, I try that. |

This won't come as a surprise I doubt but the issue is in fact the switch, the contacts have melted into the plastic (see picture). New switch to be ordered and jobs a good un' . Thanks for your help, why does this happen?

It happens as land rover in their infinite wisdom do a very simple lighting circuit which means the full voltage (and Wattage) is run through the switch.
It goes Battery ---- Fuse box --- Switch main ----- Switch hi - lo ----- Lights.. Instead of running a low current switching circuit to some relays and then running the main voltage to the lights through the relay. In short (Pun of the day) the full current of the lights through the switch contacts (A resistance Point) creates heat and this melts them. |

I see. Thanks for the explanation. Hence fitting a relay to fix the problem.
