Clutch biting with pedal close to floor
A while ago I had a warranty replacement clutch, the new clutch now operates as soon as the pedal is just off the floor, making for uncomfortable driving as you always have to concentrate on pushing the pedal all the way to the floor. In fact I have even cut a hole in the mat to help get past the biting point. I have been back to the stealer twice for remedy but no real solution, they keep making excuses about bleeding and then replacing the master cylinder, all to little benefit. The young lad on the service desk told me the clutch box said it was designed to operate in a lower position but he has now moved on and the stealer seems to be trying to avoid responsibility.
Any one else had a similar replacement clutch that bites with the pedal too close to the floor?
I've seen threads on here about adjusting but I'm not convinced that's really a solution as it only seems to be designed to adjust the pedal height.
I would be interested to know if anyone can throw light on the cure for a replacement clutch that seems to be designed to operate at a low pedal position? Of course a proper clutch would be a good starting point.

Hi Daz, Yes I had seen that one and copied it and gave it to the dealer once before, I'll probably do the same again but I am still very curious if others have had these strange cluches fitted. 2.2 90 XS

^^^A couple of carefully ground down open end 13mm spanners, and some adjustment at the master cylinder rod
Will see you get a normal clutch pedal again.

It's NOT the clutch.

When I replaced my clutch it was just the same as yours.
I can't believe the dealer couldn't sort it....muppets Rolling Eyes 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Doesn't that just change the position/amount of pedal movement rather than the clutch operation?

Hi John

Very small amounts of adjustment will make a big difference to the way the clutch will operate, 2mm either way will see pedal travel change.

Has the master cylinder been changed?

Nearly all Defender/ Discovery clutches I have changed have needed "tweeking" on the M/C rod to get a good clutch pedal.
Also, have you got the washers fitted on the rod? I've seen people put these back together minus the washer.
This can make a huge difference in pedal travel.

You also need a very slight amount of play between the 2 nuts in order for it to be free.

It sounds as your M/C is not pushing back enough to operate the clutch properly.
Have a play about with adjustment, backing off, increasing adjustment etc.
You will find the correct position eventually.

Tks for the new inputs Ian, wooden tops did something with the master cylinder last time but I would have thought if they'd replaced it they would have had to adjust it correctly? Anyway, had a recce under the bonnet earlier and it looks easy enough to get at so will probably take the cover off tomorrow and see what's there.

I Had EXACTLY the same problem... Dealer said it was just the new clutch and would bed in (I.e go away)... So I set the clutch as per the manual (TD5 I think) and it's been fine ever since... Went back to the dealer and said I'd happily show them how to set a clutch pedal correctly... (Don't think they we're overly impressed with that)

Hi Folks,
I found myself having to work in Guildford this morning so arranged to pop in to Hunters for a second opinion on my clutch. They took it for a quick spin, agreed it could use some adjustment and did it there and then, without even an appointment. All free under warranty.
So three cheers for Hunters of Guildford - excellent service Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

As for the wooden tops in Pulborough, well they've been in denial about the problem and about the ability to adjust the clutch even though I sent them the instructions on how to do it. Can they really be that incompetent??? 2.2 90 XS
