pre 09MY puma engine - Russian Roulette ?
I am cosidering purchasing an 08MY 110 station wagon XS spec with 37k miles from a LR dealer in Cork. I had a brief uninformed test drive and thought it was a bit clonky and the engine was rattly at high revs but not a trace of smoke even from cold start up. Then I discovered your fantastic website ! Thanks to everyone's contributions I am going back for another spin this time armed with 5 pages of things to check - clutch, service bulletins propshaft nipples etc etc ! I've got copies of the service invoices and have also spoken to the previous owner who said he never had any problems, never took it off road or towed and usually used it for trips of at least 30 miles. However he also freely admitted he never once checked the dipstick between services but the oil light never came on ! The only thing thats worrying me is this engine knock / oil spray jet issue.Although I'm sure I can get some extra warranty as well as all the other things that will no doubt need doing before I part with any cash I'd just like to ask if anyone knows how big a problem this has been. How many vehicles were affected ? Are there any preventative actions that can be taken or is it simply a ticking time bomb that can happen at any mileage ? I am restricted to pre Jul 08 models due to punitive car tax legislation for vehicles registered after this date

I thin the VIN ranges of vehicles potentially affected by the issue were posted here some time ago.. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

[Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc]

I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic.

you're absolutely right - thats where I found out about the relevent service bulletin. Apparently any vehicle from 9A767162 onwards is OK. The one I'm looking at is 8A757672. I've no idea how these VIN nos are sequenced but I'm guessing as the first digits are lower it was manufactured before the fix.many thanks

the last 6 numbers are the vehicle serial number (sequential across model years). The 8 in 8A and 9 in 9A indicate the model years (2008 and 2009 respectively.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
2015 D90 XS SW

Well, they ran out of numbers at 9 Wink
So A is 2010
B 2011
and so on Smile

The Defender must be just about the only vehicle to have wrapped around on VIN year identifiers Cool  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
2015 D90 XS SW
