Anyone watched the BBC2 programme Build a Car Live, while a little chaotic in parts I found it very enjoyable, informative and entertaining. And much better than than the usual cooking, Bake Off type fare we have been getting recently.
Was it just me or did James May at times slip into a Chris Evans excitable fast talking and mannerism mode, perhaps it was an in joke! For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

We were saying, what a shame they never done that with the Defender production line.
I think that was a missed opportunity? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

I made a point of watching it both nights and by and large enjoyed most of it ....barring the fact that Kate Humble niggles me along with the countryfile-esque get the presenter to have a go instead of being shown and informed how they do thing by the people who know best. On that tack I was impressed with the way the workforce presented themselves and their information to camera. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

I enjoyed it and do like James May but found him mildly irritating in this programme. I'd like to see a Defender put through the Mini water ingress test - a bit different to the one at LR

I watched it for around 15 mins...until
James May has been around Clarkson tooooo long... He's stood next to a Mini clubman and saying something like stay tuned this is live, real construction happening now, not like that big build program..... Now I watched the big build, and imho building houses for soldiers who have all manor of wounds both physically and mentally and who helped keeping us safe IS FAR more important and needed than watching a mini being built. I just don't know why sometimes they (the ex top gear bods) don't just zip it. |

It was a great program and very impressed with the amount of care and quality that goes into producing cars these days.
I did the LR factory tour last year and if anything LR had even more automation and quality control. They even had the same drench test on the Defender line ( although I'm sure I saw the tester wearing a wet suit..😃) without the automation of the rest if the factory though I'd love to work in the industry, the guys on camera all had a great passion for what they were doing. Cheers Simon |

I watched some of it but found the delivery style rather wearing, so gave up. It was interesting though to compare the Cowley Works of today with the Cowley Works I knew and once toured back in the 1970s. Then it really was a big, big place (it's tiny now by comparison) and was building, in a generally similar way, some ghastly cars appallingly badly!
I can remember part-built and unpainted bodyshells from Pressed Steel Fisher (who remembers that name?) standing around outside before assembly; they were seriously rusty before assembly was even started! No wonder that few BL cars from that era survive. |
