erm...
do you avoid going round corners just in case it kills your centre diff? And do you always make sure that your Defender has bang on 50/50 weigh distribution so you get the same amount of slip on both axles? |

It would not be good to run tyres of *significantly* different sizes front and rear, though for a short time (eg an emergency) it is unlikely to do any harm. The OP however is asking about 235/85 vs 265/75, two sizes which differ in diameter by around 0.03%, it isn't going to make a blind bit of difference. If you have 1mm more wear on your front tyres than your rear you'll have about the same difference. I actually have different diff ratios front and rear because the rear axle has a standard 1:3.54 P38 crownwheel and pinion and the front has an Ashcroft HD R&P which is 1:3.5 ratio. This will make more difference than the OP's tyres and guess what, after 125,000 miles the transfer box is fine. It will be unusual and not ideal, but for one month or so it really isn't going to be a problem. |

I can vouch for the above, mine was on the above combination for a couple of months/2500 miles. Times were hard and all that, that was 18 months ago and there's been no universe destroying effects due to my abuse of my Defender.

Plenty of 4x4s have Differing F & R sizes from the Factory most prominent is the X5
The Defender is largely different due to it axles so it can all sorts of combinations that said I always match size and tread pattern but that is my choice Outside of the Defener world its wholly different storey if you want to maintain driveline warranty not only do you have to maintain OEM sizing you are limited to Brand and then tyre spec within brand for instance fitting to a Cayenne non N rated or mixing N1 with NO's or N2's is sacrilege  don't get me started with Fezza's & Lambo's
So I fully understand why people believe these mix n match storeys. As always you motor your choice Me always same size same pattern & matching depths as those black round thinks are the only things that keep you in contact with terra-firma  |

Tyres should always match...just like womens underwear... knickers and bra should always match.
It's all about detail. I know when I buy a car, if the tyres aren't matching I tend to walk away, as it's obviously ran on a budget...not a good sign that it's been looked after. |
