United Kingdom 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Santorini Black
Mix and match?
Hi Guys

Bit of an odd one, and I think the answer will be no, but just wanted to qualify it.

Got a 110 Puma USW. It has two brand new Generals on the back in 235/85/16 as per standard.
The front ones are almost down to their legal limit, and certainly need changing before the winter.

I'd like to go to BFG KO2 really but can't afford to do all four at once. Could I get away with putting 265/75/16s on an axle (probably the back) and move the generals to the front? Should only be for a couple of months if that?

If its a non starter I'll just get Generals on the front again.

cheers North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

NO worries mate, as long as they are on the same axle all will be well.

I would fit the new tyres to the front axle however...

Those new BFG AT's look GREAT! Cool I wish I had seen these before fitting my Continental A/T!! Crying or Very sad YOLO... You Only Live Once...

Mixing 235/85/R16 on one axle and 265/75/R16 on the second axle? This is not good idea, and I think, it is not road legal, at least here in Czech republic. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I can't see that being legal in the UK as one axel will not match your spare.

Perfectly legal BMWs are sold standard with fast tyres on the rear and skin on the front.

As mentioned the size needs to match on the same axle. Buy two tyres are a time. Nothing wrong with that

Shouldn't be a problem as the two sizes have basically the same rolling radius. You may just lose out on steering lock with the wider tyres on the front.
It generally frowned upon to have tyres of different rolling radii, but ok for widths as per orangebandit says, you can by cars with differential fit tyres, albeit wider on the back.

The difference in nominal diameters between a 235/85 and a 265/75 is around .08 of an inch, so less than 1/10th (the 265 is in fact the smaller).

The difference between a worn tyre and a new tyre is far more than this.

It will be unconventional but won't cause any problems.

Space-saver spares don't match anything and are legal.

Defender is full time 4x4, not a good idea to fit different size tyres, it can cause premature wear in the drivetrain. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

My m3 has 245/35/19 on the front & 315/25/19 on the rear the difference being its rear wheel drive!!!

As long as the rolling radius is near the same it would be fine Wink

EXACTLY! Thumbs Up

My Lotus came standard with 16 inch fronts and 17 inch rears... different width and aspect ratios but the rolling radius was the same... give or take tread wear.

Anyway, if you have any doubts, just call your local MOT place. YOLO... You Only Live Once...

Hmmm ask your insurance or better still tell them you modified the vehicle to save money

Guess the repsonse.

It's different if your car was designed and type approved with different size wheels and tyres.lots of bmw inc their 4@4s have larger rear wheels and tyres.
Unless you know better I think most of the defenders, disco and range rovers of recent years have come with the same size all round.

I suspect they have their reasons for doing this....

Guys, fitting different size tyres will cause "wind up" in the centre diff and in turn, cause premature failure. Comparing it to a M3 and a Lotus is totally missing the point. Do not fit different size tyres. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

Why would it cause wind up if the rolling radius is very near the same???? more like having worn
tyres on one axle & new on the other, even then it wouldn't cause wind up!!
