It won't be anything serious but it is an MOT failure so get it checked and fix whatever it is. It is most likely to be EGR valve in which case it is best to replace them but if you are skint cleaning it and lubricating the workings with either lithium or copper grease works well
Ps removing the +ve terminal won't clear the fault code |

As above^^ not a MOT fail, it would only go down as advisory.
Also don't assume it's always EGR related, there are lots of things that can throw up a MIL light. Over boost is a common one on the Puma engine. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

I will
In the mean time my warranty apparently covers taking it in for a free check. I will do this next week as they could not fit me in this week. I will update once I know. |

Hello
Had my Defender in the garage today to check the EML code, I've ordered a Ultraguage (and sods law I missed the delivery today) However I didn't want to just reset it with out knowing what it could be. The garage said there were two codes, one was a historic one that apparently could have been due to a flat battery and was cleared, The second related to the MAF sensor. So they said they took this out, cleaned it and reset code, Then took it out for a drive. Its been fine (and light off) on way home so will see Total £41 How much is a MAF sensor if I need one? |

Just had exactly the same thing happen, has your light stayed off or come back on?
Just done a quick 200 miles and all seems fine, no loss of power. Simon |

MAF is around £120 genuine, however, some know the OE manufacturer which is a lot cheaper.
The EGR can sometimes trigger MAF codes, but not likely the other way around. So it sounds like your MAF has just been a bit dirty, no EGR issues. But, the EGR is still a real pain and it won't be if, it'll be when you'll get EGR issues and it'll likely do the same thing. Having the Ultragauge will be invaluable anyway, I have the Alive ATRIC for most things but the Ultragauge has more features for uses other than faults and mapping only. Now you can read codes yourself, you can I.D. What they are and repair accordingly. Then wipe codes and job complete. There are a few exceptions like key programming and injector learning it won't do though but is ideal for MAP, MAF, EGR & Turbo etc. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸â›½ï¸ðŸ›¢ï¸âš™ï¸ðŸ§°ðŸ’ª |

Hello Stacey007
Welcome to P1103.... K9F was right first time (well done Mal)... It's a sit up in your seat moment when this comes on for the first time...and the 'what if's' start to be processed. Mine has come on 3 times in 3 years...1st occasion I did what you have just done (well almost) bought a ScangaugeII and got this... Click image to enlarge Mine reset after 4/5 engine start 'cycles' (less than 6 anyway) now I check the code, clear it, and press on. I now understand that many have been here before (thank you D2N...it;s like having my own mechanic) To be honest there is only so much you can do with the MAF Sensor (IMO) as it is essentially a themocouple sealed and it either works or it doesn't....but I'd add to that they they do appear to deteriorate...which may be your situation, if repeatedly 'triggering' the fault code then 'engine light' (MIL Malfunction Illumination Light). I took out the Sensor and generally cleaned the air intake box, but it probably was one of those clean it and it runs better actions...good to get any leaves / rubbish out though and a drop of WD40 on the connector. Click image to enlarge MAF Sensor is in the 'upstream' air side of the Air Filter housing Click image to enlarge Unplug and generally look... Click image to enlarge and clean (as much as you can) Goof Luck with the long term fix SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |
