My rear lights are coming on by themselves
From new my 59 plate 110 utility has the rear lights coming on by themselves, sometimes the hi level brake light comes on aswell. I notice this when I am stopping to open and shut gates and on the road a mate who was following me said that the lights were on for most of the time.
The vehicle has just had the first service and the dealer can find nothing wrong and has no idea what could be causing the fault. I am not too impressed with the dealer as another fault which was the driver's door not staying open, there is no 'click' whatsoever when you open the door and want the door to stay open. The other 3 doors all work as they should do.
Anyway they claimed to have fixed it when they haven't.

If you've got a trailer socket fitted, check for shorts in the back. (Stray wire strands)

If it's brake lights (i would have though it is, if the 3rd one is lighting up as well) then more likely a badly adjusted brake light switch, or one of the spade terminals has been knocked off and is touching an earth point (without looking at the wiring diagram, i don't know if the lights themselves are powered and then ground to earth via the switch, or the power stops at the switch until you press the pedal)

Many thanks for your replies, I think that it is the brake lights but it is odd to me that the high level brake light comes on with the other two, and sometimes it does not.
I am not much good on electrics but will start to check trailer socket etc for anything obvious. I have just been told by someone who services defenders that there has been a bad batch of bulbs, and by changing them has cured some faults.

just take it back to the dealer (or try a different one) and tell them to sort it. its under warranty after all.
