Reprogramming an ECU
Hi everyone, I've been having a nightmare with my 2007 Defender 110. Not going to go into the details what the nightmare is but was hoping someone could answer a simple question? Is it possible to check an ECU, alarm and immobiliser control box and key fobs out of the car and not in situ for any faults?

It would be far easer to hook them all back up to the car to check them with a diagnostic tool. failing that you could make a bench loom up to test them but unless all the engine electronic components are connected the pcm will show faults.

I assume you have the car they came from to reconnect them to ? Also may be cheaper than sending them to the UK in postage costs.

Thanks for the info Pete. The problem is I live on Boa Vista, Cape Verde Islands, think of a desert island in the middle of the Atlantic and imagine the service you get from mechanics somewhere like that then you'll get an idea what life is like over here! Ford and Toyota all the way but no one (and I mean no one in the whole of the Cape Verde Islands) have access to software to get into the heart of the ECU and check for latest software etc etc.

There's no way I can do what you suggest unfortunately. We had mechanics working on our Landie over the weekend that we flew over from another island where they are used to working on Ford Rangers and Transits so familiar with the engine but don't have the software to alter or reprogramme anything in the ECU.

The mechanics checked everything when they worked on the car, mechanics of the engine are sound, the fuel injectors are functioning properly and firing, smoke is coming out of the exhaust when cranking over, wiring loom has been checked and no faults in the wiring found as far as they know.

When they were doing diagnostic checks there was a couple of faults with the ECU reading what should have been a fault but wasn't recognised. When they disconnected the air intake sensor the ECU read this as being a fault, when they disconnected a fuel injector the ECU did not read that the injector wasn't connected for example.

They think there's a software issue/problem in the ECU unit! This is why I have sent the ECU, alarm and immobiliser control box and key fobs back to the UK and looking for someone to check out both the hardware and software to make sure there's no faults. If after being checked they come back all clear then I'm really at a lost what to do next so I'm kinda hoping that there is a software problem because then I can at least diagnose why our Landie won't start!

Before flying a mechanic/electrical engineer over from the UK (hopefully!!) I want to make sure that everything with the above has been checked and functioning before putting back into our Defender and take it from there. Sensors have been changed recently, crank and cam shaft, timing checked, new (reconditioned but programmed correctly) injectors etc etc! This car has a lot of history due to us living on Boa Vista but we did fly a mechanic over from the UK in the past and he couldn't get it started either. One of the first things he did was instal the latest software for our Defender and I've got a funny feeling this has messed things up with the ECU!?

2.5 years our Bubba has been off the road!!

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

Sounds like a nightmare. But that said you can buy your own diagnostic tool called the IID BT Tool. This will do fault codes as well as reprogram the standard ecu software to the engine ecu if needed.

So with the tool it's self if you had in hand and then also the forum for help and support of repairs. If the is island is that limited to real functional diagnostics for your land rover it may be worth the investment ?

I could even if needed produce an immobiliser removed file software for the tool you could test and illuminate any immobiliser issues.

Sounds like you know what you are talking about! Would it be worth my while sending you the ECU, alarm/immobiliser control box and keys fobs and you could make sure everything is ok with them both with hardware and software?

The parts are going back to the UK tomorrow with a friend so could be posted to your business address next week? Obviously I would pay for any charges to check all the equipment and for software download etc etc?

I could fit them all to a car bit it won't prove much as the instrument pack is missing from the line up as well as your own engine sensors and injectors etc.

My personal feeling is you are going about it the wrong way and diagnosis will be always best on the car it's self.

If your worried about the immobiliser not working correctly send me the engine ecu only and I'll remove it then the alarm 10as box and the fobs can be removed from the problem equation.

Hello Pete, totally agree diagnostics on the car would be best way forward. What I'm a little worried about though is the ECU has always been suspect so ideally I would like to get the ECU, alarm/immobiliser control box and key fobs checked over in the UK (they are now with my mum in Scotland) just to make sure they are all fine with both hardware and software. After that put them back into the Landie then run a diagnostic check on everything and see what that comes back with and take it from there.

Would you be willing to give all the above a check over? If you can please let me know how much you would charge to do so and we can take it from there.

What I was reluctant to do was pay to fly a mechanic/auto electrician over to Boa only for them to say you have a hardware problem with the ECU! Ideally want to rule that out then fly over a mech who can change anything that needs change or repaired. It's impossible to get parts on Boa Vista so I really need to know what parts I need before flying over a mechanic which is why I want to know that the above parts are ok!?

Did the alarm fob when pressed turn the alarm off and flash the indicators as it should ?


I'm confident you don't have to fly anyone out to you and waste money on this. It would be cheaper just to but a diagnostic tool and spare engine ecu from eBay uk if you suspect fault.

Regarding me fitting them to a car to test them. That is possible but as said you have not got the instrument pack to make it a fuller test so I can only test part of your setup not all and as said does not test your own fuel pump, injectors, sensors, wiring loom etc. But if you want to send them to me I'll do what I can with the part set to test them for you

I really do think as already said your looking at this to complexly. The defender 2.4 is a very very simple setup and can run with just an engine ecu only provided it's wired as it should be. They key and alarm box can be done away with easily excluding them from causing any problems with the correct diagnostic tools.

I've just looked on eBay UK by typing defender 2.4 engine ecu and many are available a hell of a lot cheaper than flying someone out to you ! Their is even a full matching set for sale with alarm ecu instrument pack etc etc.

If it's ok with you I would like to send all the parts I currently have down to you to test. I know this won't be a comprehensive test as it's not connected up to the car but if you can't find any fault with the ECU, alarm/immobiliser, key fobs etc then that puts my mind at ease and I know I don't need to buy an ECU.

Is it possible to remove the alarm/immobiliser completely both the hardware and with a software update to the ECU? If this is possible does it mean I don't have to reinstal the alarm/immobiliser box?

It is very dusty and sandy where I live constantly getting into all parts of the engine on a daily basis, well it was when the car was running!!

I know you're probably thinking this guy doesn't have a clue and to be honest I don't really but 2.5 years not having my Landie has been doing my head in and I just want to be absolutely certain I don't need a new ECU etc. In terms of security cars don't get stolen where I live, the island is too small and it's impossible to flog a stolen motor so I don't need to worry about security.

If I can minimise any potential future issues (immobiliser going wonky for example) I would be more than happy to do so.

After you have checked the hardware/software and if everything is ok with it I can get the parts back over to Boa Vista and buy diagnostic equipment like you suggest then run a test and see where that takes me.

Hi

Just send me the engine ECU. The rest is no good without the instrument pack. I can remove it's immobiliser TOTALLY so it does not need the alarm ecu at all.

Sending the alarm ecu and key will gain nothing more than the engine ecu, so ONLY send that.

I'll fit it to a car and video the results for you with immobiliser removed, also see my web site help FAQ section on how to read the injector codes from the injectors. Let ne know the codes from your car and I'll check them also.

Just waiting for my mum to confirm she has received the parts then I'll get her to send the engine ECU down to you. I tried to get all the injector codes today and having real difficulty reading some of the numbers!

Do you have an email address so I can send you over the injector codes with a macro image of each serial number so you can cross reference this to the codes I send you?

Please can you let me know how much I should budget for you checking over the ECU and removing all security systems from the ECU set up?
