Guys, please excuse the stupid questions as I've read through the threads that come up in the Search option. I can't stand electrickery at all and for most of my LR ownership I've had series motors that don't use too much of the stuff. Alarms and immobilisers just annoy me.
Is it possible to permanently switch off the immobiliser function. My 2000 TD5 has in the last few days been difficult to start. The immobiliser seems stuck on. This afternoon it took over a dozen attempts to get started. I recently changed the fob battery so I'm assuming it's not that. Where should I look? I will admit to being confused by some of the advice so far. I really am a bit thick when it comes to car electrics. I'd rather have no immobiliser than have an unreliable motor. Any ideas? |

What do you mean by hard to start. If the immobiliser hasnt deactivated the enge wont turn over and the immobiliser light in the warning lamps will flash when you turn the key (not the one in the speedo) if the engine turns over but doesnt start then its probably injector seals, if it just clicks and doesnt turn over its the starter solenoid. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

Just clicks, then nothing. No flashing lights.
Starter solenoid? Easy fix? |

I'd try replacing the contacts in the starter, kits are cheap and it's an easy job to do.

Solenoid contract kit bought and arrived by post today. This evening will have a go. Haynes Book of Truth? states that prop needs to be removed to get starter off. Surely not?

You can at a push, do it in situ. The last time I did mine I did it so. It is a fiddle to get the top contact out but can be done.
If you take the starter motor off be aware the third nut, the one you can't see at the back, is a different size socket a 15 if I remember correctly. Plus a few long extensions are helpfull. |

The third nut is a 15mm. I got mine out from underneath by bringing it forward and coming out by the steering. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Gave it a try this evening. It was nearly dark though. I just about found the top nut with my fingers but couldn't get a socket on it. Is it better to go from the top or the bottom. I've got hands like shovels and always struggle squeezing them into small gaps. I'll give it a go tomorrow after work if I get back home in time.

Bloody thing. Tried for over an hour tonight and I couldn't get my big mitts anywhere near the top nut. Replaced the starter plunger in situ. Starts a bit better but not yet perfect. Will get it swapped sometime soon by a local specialist. 1999 Td5 110 CSW
