Thank you. I'm pleased with the end result. Just 'donated' my old version to a fellow forum member not too far away who also has a swing away carrier. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I've seen Mal's handywork first hand and it looks the dog's danglies. Great job and very unique
Mind you, the mkI version is pretty cool too and soon to be fitted to my 90. I personally don't like spare wheels hanging on the back of landy's or on the bonnet I prefure to keep it fixed in the back.
if they are on the outside of the car even if they are not stolen they can be vandalized quite easily and you will only know it when you need to use the spare and find out some scumbag has slashed it / removed the valve / or what ever Graham 1988 Defender 90 county 200tdi ( Beast ) Paul Walker 1973-2013 ( I Almost Had You ) |

Russ you're welcome, hope it fits ok.
Unfortunately I can't afford to lose the space of storing my wheel in the rear. I haven't seen any threads pertaining spare wheel vandalism, only theft. In mitigation my spare is not covered so I would notice vandalism before I came to use it. You can realistically only react to what is practical, if I had a 110 or the room in the rear I would possibly spend time considering your option. Any ideas or recommendations on what type, length of chain/lock to use with a mantec wheel carrier? Boost alloy wheels

With a Mantec your wheel is attached to three bolts on a plate so you can't pick up on the two unused holes on the wheel as they are blind. You could perhaps consider drilling a hole through the centre of the plate and using the same principle as above instead of using two welded M12 bolts use a centrally welded bolt or bar to pass through the plate and lock off behind perhaps?
If you didn't wish to use an engineering fabrication method just measure the length of chain required using a piece of string or wire passing it through the u bend on the left hand side of the carrier. Found this thread very interesting and useful but sadly all the pictures are missing. Is there any chance you may still have these pictures? Would you mind posting them again? Thanks |

Amended with what pictures I still have. Hope they help. Whilst not foolproof (nothing ever is) even with the right tooling it would take 15-20 minutes to remove the spare so perhaps put off opportune thieves. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I've bought myself one of these to keep mine on the car, along with 3 locking wheel nuts.

That was the first solution I saw and rathe liked. Just read that padlock doesn't fair well in the rain over time though. Might be worth seeing if you can get a similar sized padlock which is fully waterproofed / water resistant?
I was thinking if I do get one, I'd get some sort of metal shield built to go above and around it to shelter the lock as much as possible from the elements. |

Hello All,
I remembered K9F / Mal's post, and liked the idea of not just relying on a Security Lock Nut(s) when it comes to protecting the Spare Wheel. My route is a variation along the same lines, Mantec Spare Wheel Carrier + Alloy Adapter (for the Wheels fitted), then my 'Cover Plate' behind the Adapter, a 'Through Post' to set up the 'Wheel Nut Cover Cone' and Quality Lock. Materials a combination of Stainless Steel, Molybdenum Steel, Marine Grade Aluminium Alloy, Nylon and Neoprene.
