If I stick a Disco transfer box do I need to then re-map to make it worhtwhile? If I don't re-map the ECU will I be in no-mans land in terms of driveability? 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver

Haven't been able to get hold of Shane. If I do change the T-box for a Disco one does it need a remap to make it worthwhile. Funds won't allow c.£300 for a remap so if I just change the box will I be left with a worse set up than I have on the standard T-box now.
I wasn't going to do the T-box now but as the seals on the current one need changing it seems like the best time to change it if it worth it without a remap? Thoughts appreciated, Tom. 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver 1995 110 CSW 300TDi - SOLD |

I've changed the t box and haven't had mine mapped (yet) it does change the way it drives (obviously) and I found I needed more revs out of junctions etc but at higher speeds and motorways it much quieter and smoother. So I guess it depends on what roads you drive weather it's worth changing. Ashcroft do a service where if you are getting the t box refurbed they can put the disco gears into your box so you don't have to change the font cone and drive shaft couplings over. Ray

Thanks the reply - I'm mainly A-roads to get to where I need to be and then over fields and tracks when out with the dog. A few more revs at the junctions I can live with if it's still sensible? Being able to sit at 60-70 with less revs is appealing though, presumably it helps on the fuel consumption? I suppose the re-map could come down the line, but I don't want to compromise what it does over the winter when it may be in soft fields etc. as I doubt I will be getting the ECU done before next summer.

It felt strange at first but you get used to the extra revs low down quickly and it's not excessive. Mines a road queen so I can't comment on any off road but I can't see it making much difference on grass etc and with you doing a roads it will probably be a good addition for you. Alternatively ashcrofts do a higher 5th gear for the gearbox if you want to keep the transfer box standard which will be better at motorway speeds and keep pulling away from junctions less revy. Ray

I haven't felt the need for a remap, mine's a 90 though but running tall tyres as well (265/75R16).

I'm the same Martin, it doesn't need a remap but I think it would make a good improvement when pulling out from junctions etc. Ray

A lot to think about - the 5th gear ratio appeals, I may need to research that.
Has anyone got a non-remapped T-fer box change view on the off road capability? My thinking is that there is still always low ratio? Tom. 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver 1995 110 CSW 300TDi - SOLD |

I had mine remapped before I swapped the transfer box over so I never drove it with standard power on the higher ratio. I have used the low box though - at home we've got a very steep bit of land with an orchard at the top, I used the low ratio box to get up the steep hill (prob a 40 degree slope, backwards) and pulling out some small trees, I've also used it in the field for towing a grass topper, the low box is very useful now and then.
As for fuel consumption - the t/box helps, but the biggest gain was the remap, I got around 2/3mpg better after a remap (std t/box) and possibly 3/4 after swapping the t/box. I don't really do any off roading, mainly just A to B around Devon. It's hilly and twisty in parts and some lanes/roads need to be taken slowly so there can be lots of gear changing when narrow roads limit visibility. To be honest - if you have no intention of a remap I'd stick to standard gearing, if you are thinking of a remap soon after swapping the t/box then it makes the mod worthwhile. Just my 2 penneth |

I'm having the transfer box on my TD5 90 HT converted from the standard 1.4 to the Disco 1.2 at Ashcrofts within the next couple of weeks and I am not intending to have a remap. I sometimes tow a 1.5 tonne trailer and don't do any off-roading. Reading the comments from others on this forum I feel happy that I am making the right choice. I'll post a comment once it's done. ------------------------------------------------

For what it's worth - Discovery Transfer put in by AL Services yesterday. I picked it up at lunch today and drove the 15mins back to work and I have to say that initial impressions are very good. It might lack a little Hp at the top end but on the flat/marginal down hill it comforably pushed 80mph. More improtantly in the mid-range it was far nicer to drive.
Time will tell when I get it in to the fields but I barely noticed the increased rev requirement. Thanks for the views to date. I'm sure a re-map would make it better again but currently funds won't allow. Great service from AL Services. They also wired up a rear work light to come on when reverse is selected. My next question for the electrical experts is how easy will it be to run a switch forward to the dash with a permanent live so I have one there? Occasionally I park on a hill and need the work light so don't want to have to keep killing the engine and leaving it in reverse to keep the light on while I load the boot? Stick it in reverse in the main box, neutral in the transfer box, and leave the engine running. Make sure of course that the handbrake is good though.
Remember that having a work light wired into the reverse circuit is technically illegal, and it is illegal to use a work light in a place to which the Road Traffic Acts apply (so public highway or "place to which the public has access") unless it is used in conjuction with a flashing warning beacon. That being said, I have never heard of anyone being hassled for either. |
