Used the search function on here.
"Nokian Hakkapeliitta" gives you 25 threads "Cooper Discoveres M+S" gives you only 1 thread. But that is because you misspelled it. (Should be Discoverer, that gives you 30 threads) Now, this can be an an endless discussion. Can only speak for myself, I have the Nokians for the winter, and matter of fact here in Switzerland JLR are selling those on Wolf wheels as an official winter Defender accessory. After 6 past winters, can not fault them on anything. Good in all rainy and wintry weather, and only marginally more noisy than my summer GG TR. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Ken, Studs are a grey matter. They are illegal but are not illegal!!! You can run them but its the discretion of the officer who pulls you eg if your in the Scottish highlands in a foot of snow then they are legal. If you are driving round Chelsea then NOPE. will hunt out the bit I have on them later. Think it goes down to damaging the Queens Highway
Knew Nokian was the god but even gods get it wrong some times lol. To me Winter tyres are the ones wsith snow flakes, if they havent got it then they are an all rounder. |

The laws require that in order to be legal a tyre must comply with a number of legal requirements.
These requirements range from what the manufacturer must be responsible for - relevant sidewall markings etc - and what the motorist should be responsible for - correct fitment and condition of tyre, tread depths etc. It is recommended that tyres are checked on a weekly basis for tread depth, tread condition, inflation pressure, tread/sidewall damage, any signs of irregular wear. If in doubt seek the advice of a trained tyre expert who will be able to determine the suitability of the tyre for further use. The penalties for having illegal tyres are currently up to a £2500 fine and 3 penalty points PER TYRE! The following gives an overview of the relevant points. There are two important Legal Statutes that Relate to Tyres: 1. The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. These regulations do not cover only tyre legal requirements but any area related to road usage and traffic. They include areas related to dimensions and manoeuvrability, brakes, wheels, springs, tracks, steering, vision, instruments, fuel, minibuses, power to weight ratio, protective systems, control of emissions, plates, markings, testing and inspection and conditions related to use. 2. Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994 Which cover the requirements relating to the supply of tyres and areas such as E markings, Part Worn tyres and Re-treads. The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 Regulation Number Subject Area Regulation 24 Indicates the types of vehicle covered and also temporary use spares Regulation 25 Details tyre loads and speed ratings Regulation 26 Stipulates the requirements for tyre mixing Regulation 27 Details condition and Maintenance of Tyres Damage to road, person or vehicle If the tyre causes either damage to the road, or to persons, or to any vehicle using the road. This would cover such instances as if a vehicle with damaged or very oversized tyres which either caught against a person or other vehicle resulting in either damage or injury. Studded tyres also are included in this clause and if used in inappropriate conditions (i.e. where there is no ice or snow) and they damage the road surface then they would be clearly illegal. |

No, not studded. Not legal here and not required either. Switzerland is not the north of Scandinavia you know. If it would get so bad that you need studded tires, so mainly because of icy roads, better to leave the car home and use public transport. You might have studded tires, but others on those icy roads not. If you would think about studs because of a foot of snow in the mountains, then putting chains (4 of them) would be better again. A month from now it will be time to put the winter wheels/tires on again. Can only recommend not to wait too long before buying what you want, as there is the usual scramble for winter tires once the first - unexpected - serious winter storm happens. And then stock evaporates quickly. Eric You never actually own a Defender. I've had Nokians on the G-wagon for three winter seasons - which has included trips to the Alps each year and various travels outside of the UK in snowier climes - and found them to be excellent. I've also used Pirelli Scorpion Winters, which were also excellent, but stupidly priced imho. So, another vote for Nokians |

Why a fifth? The LT which I have is unidirectional. Nobody here buys 5 winter tires. I guess the current LT2 will also be unidirectional???? Just leave your summer wheel on the rear door as we all do, the chance that you will get a flat is very remote anyway.
Eric Edit: just looked at LT2 picture. They are unidirectional, so buying a 5th for the spare wheel seems a no go. Unless you are sure before you buy it if you will run a flat on the left or on the right side. You never actually own a Defender. What size winter tyres should I put on my Dotz Dakar 7x16 wheels?
I don't want them too fat. I run standard steelies in the summer. |
