Wheel bearing seal (RTC3511) for rear Pinion ?
I was gonna change the rear pinion seal few days ago on my Puma. I found out that I got a wrong seal from the landrover store , to small. Found out after I had taken everything apart and removed the leaking seal. This happened on saturday and no way for me to buy new pinion seal till the coming monday morning.

I had few seals laying around and thought for a moment that the Wheel Bearing seal where the correct seal for the Pinion, it fit perfectly.

Ok called a friend that works on these landrovers and he told me that it was a Bearing seal , not a pinion seal.

I decided to give the wheel bearing seal a try as a Pinion seal. Now I have driven 1000 km with a wheel bearing seal in my rear pinion and not yet a drop of oil leak.

I have already bought the correct pinion seal and will install it as soon as the Bearing seal start leaking. I found it interesting to know that the bearing seal can be used in emergency if needed as a pinion seal.

The part number of this wheel bearing seal is RTC3511 from Britpart.

Just posting this as good to know info. http://www.defender2.net/gallery/index.php?cat=13451

Useful to know.
I've also found from experience. (Didn't complete the work myself however)
That the flange on the diff can have un-even wear so if you have a leak and simply change the seal it'll likely still leak or leak before you know it after a few hundred or thousand miles if your lucky.

Change the flange and oil seal and you should be good to go.

Yes your right.
Ys your right , the flange can be damaged to. Mine where ok , not scarred from the seal. I bought this Defender new , 3 years ago and there has been a little leak almost from the beginning. It might be because I installed a long breather pipe all the way from the rear up under the bonnet where the other breather pipes are. Maby it causes to much pressure inside the casing. Might be the cause of the leak. I have also twice had to change rear wheel bearing seals. http://www.defender2.net/gallery/index.php?cat=13451

Yes, I have heard of the breather becoming blocked but mine wasn't it was a worn flange and knackered seal.
Was it the rear diff you had it?

I have also had problems with aftermarket pinion flanges (ostensibly good aftermarket ones, not Britpart) being machined out of round and not sealing. It's disconcerting when a new seal and a new pinion still leak, but I had three in succession that were up to 6 thou out. A genuine one solved the problem in the end.

Me too BW, genuine seal and genuine flange. Oh and genuine bill. Shocked Thumbs Up

What causes the wear when fitted though?

Eventually the seal wears a groove in the pinion flange.
