Corrosion Warranty
I'm looking to attempt to get a few bits done through the corrosion warranty but not sure if they will qualify -

Rear crossmember - small amount of rust on bottom right
Rear towbar and step - both completely ridden with surface rust
Front bumper - lots of little pits but could be argued that stone chips caused it
Front windscreen cap - one has started blistering but only very slightly

Has anyone some advice on what would be covered and if I should approach them about all of it or go bit by bit?

Thanks

Is the vehicle still covered by warranty? if not, I doubt if any of that will be covered. (edited for clarity) Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Yes - The corrosion warranty is 6 years and the car is only 3 years old so still well within the period.

Its in for a service and oil pump recall at the same time so would like to pick these up and see what can be done.

I've no direct experience of claiming Paint Protection or Corrosion Warranty but reading through the warranty benefits as stated in JLR's documentation I would like to add a cautionary note. JLR state (and it is outlined in a black lined box) that both Paint Surface and Corrosion Protection warranties applies to "bodywork". So is corrosion of the rear chassis cross member classed as bodywork??? Something other members may have direct experience of. The documentation clearly states that bumpers are excluded from the above warranties.

Hope you can get this sorted and clarify what is and isn't classed as bodywork. it would be nice to let us all hear the response from your dealer.

I think once the car is out of warranty, the corrosion warranty only applies for 'perforation' - or thats what my main dealer told me............... Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Best of just asking the dealer about all of them in one go, what's the worst they can say? No?

Purely depends of the attitude of the dealership. If under 3 years old...no issues....but once over it can be a bunfight to get it done. Most of your list are the 'usual suspects' and IMHO doubt if the dealer will yield, as stated no harm in asking.

See here: especially my first post in the link... Thumbs Up

Thanks all for the help, from the above, the other link and my handbook the warranty covers bodywork and only if perforated.

However it looks to be down to the dealership and LR who have the casting vote - I will ask and see what can be done.

I'm only looking at the windscreen cap cover so its not drastic.

A new bumper is £50 and painting the rear cross member professionally is about £100 so I will add them to the list.

Hi Cake,
I had a big discussion with Land Rover RE; warranty etc before buying my 90 but was definitely told all accessories bought and fitted from new were covered by warranty but I can't remember if it was 3 or 6 years.
In the end i didn't buy any and bought an after market NAS rear step and had my 90 dinitroled by Chris (Zagatto) straight off the transporter as I thought that was a better bet for longevity.
I think the dealers (which in my experience was Lookers at Chelmsford) will try any excuse to get out of warranty but maybe I'm doing the others a disservice !!!
I'd go for getting it all done if that's what you want and see what they say but at least point it out and make sure it's recorded for future ref should it develop.
You may be on a sticky wicket as it's 3 yes old but if you bought it from the dealers they should've seen/addressed it prior to the sale
Good luck and I hope you get a satisfactory out come but keep us posted please.

Mark

Accessories when bought at the time of purchase are covered for 3 years but must be on the sales invoice for the new car order.

Speak to your dealer.
Have they signed off corrosion warranty inspection in service book?
If so, then ask how any areas of bodywork corrosion were not picked up & rectified at the time.
I asked a similar question of my selling dealership at the time, and things were promptly fixed - plus some other areas of minor cosmetic damage.
My last couple of Defenders had freshly painted rear cross members + towing gear, so I'd assumed that was normal practice.
You might have to live with rust on bumpers + steps, as it's not a new vehicle.
But, ask, as you might get it fixed as 'good will' for the inconvenience caused.
Give everything a good once over & check that everything works, doesn't (unduly) rattle or leak, and that nothing is missing.
In short, do not assume that this has been properly done prior to your collection - You will be amazed at what you might find.
In addition to corrosion at bottom corners of windscreen, mine had new front discs, pads + calipers, clutch replaced, exterior lighting fault fixed, interior illumination + electrical faults fixed, heater fixed, foreign objects (coins) removed from ventilation system, towbar electrics replaced, rear screen replaced, abs sensor replaced, new door seal to fix leak, leaking Wabco vacuum pump + contaminated aux belt replaced, missing trim replaced, missing jack handle replaced, stereo faults fixed - You get the general idea!
Basically, out of my first six months of ownership, one whole month was spent at dealerships having corrective work carried out.
None of this work was covered by the 12 month warranty, as Land Rover considered that these were pre-existing faults that the dealer should have sorted when preparing the vehicle.
If you are persistent, demonstrate a basic knowledge of your vehicle, and are firm + polite at all times, even when your patience is being severely tested, then you should be successful.
Good luck & let us know how you get on.

Oh, and remember to record everything in writing - Even send summaries of telephone conversations by email, so that there can be no misunderstandings of what you are expecting to happen. '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci

I fully agree with pumaxs.

My defender was an approved used vehicle which at the time the LR website claimed "same level of quality, service and customer satisfaction that you would when buying a new vehicle". On this basis I chose to distance buy with out seeing the vehicle....

It took 12 months to get it fully sorted both mechanically and body work wise so that it is in condition that I would describe close to that. To be fair I cannot fault the overall standard of Land Rover customer service despite having to keep the pressure on.

In all fairness, I did get the "same level of quality.....that you would when buying a new vehicle", as mine was unreliable & riddled with faults! Very Happy '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci

Mine is now approaching 5 years old and I've recently noticed that there's bubbling paint around the skylights. Why these rust being an ally roof I don't know.
I'm now wondering if it will be fixed under the standard 6 year corrosion warranty.
