Vibration - there's no drone noise that I've noticed. I can just feel the vibration sometimes through the floor?

Re the swivel preload I haven't got a scoobydoo as to what that is but would be interested to find out.

Looking to replace the shaft myself as there is play in the lower uj. This typically is no longer available from landrover so for genuine td5 shaft I was quoted £184+vat and £55+vat aftermarket. Is it worth aftermarket for such a safety critical part? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Basically the swivel pins are just that, the two points, one top and one bottom of the housing in which the cv joints run that are basically hinge pins at the end of the axles so the wheels can steer. When correctly setup the pins are set to a certain preload or tightness. The preload is easy enough to check with a spring balance once the wheels & steering rods have been disconnected.

But Wayne, if your vehicle has a brand new [as opposed to nearly new or remanufactured] front axle then I very much doubt the swivel pre load will be out so I wouldn't worry about it. There are hundreds of threads about Defender steering wobble problems [example currently running here http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=95528, the main culprits are usually worn panhard rod bushes, damper and bushes, wheel balance, shock absorbers & bushes etc etc.

That is if you have wheel induced steering vibration and not a vibration from something else like a propshaft for example.

Just check the stuff that's been fitted recently and make sure you are not looking for issues that don't exist. Steve.
