I think the earlier one comes without the uj's and has a collapsible coupling
the later one comes complete with uj,s and has a rubber joint in it also think the collapsible bit gets in the way on the puma as it turns off centre so needs more room round it not 100% but sure that's it google images "defender steering shaft " might show you what I mean |

Thanks Munch.
I think the one you're thinking of is the pre-1997 one, which had an offset collapsible joint. The 1997 to 2006 and the 2007 on both appear very similar, the only difference I can see is that on my 2007 vehicle there is a sort of metal shield round the the rubber joint, whereas most of the illustrations on line don't seem to have this (confusingly many of the 2007-on illustrations don't either)! I have an intermittent very slight knock you cna feel at the steering wheel under certain conditions. The only sign of any play I can find in the steering or front axle is that if you hold the shield round the rubber joint and wiggle the shaft up and down (ie sideways, no along its length) there is a very small amount of movement. There is no movements rotationally or along the length of the shaft. I'm not sure if this is the source of my knock but thought I'd replace it anyway, at lesat till I found out that it is a £220 part! |

get someone to rock the steering wheel side to side a bit and check underneath then , sometimes very hard to check on your own
steering box ball joint ? check for movement up and down in all joints not just side to side sorry don't know if you know all this ! |

Once again I think I have answered my own question, but will post here in case anyone else is ever looking for the information.
The TDCi lower steering column (fitted from 2007), part number QME500270, has a heat shield round the rubber coupling just below the top UJ. The TD5 part (fitted from 1997 to 2006), part number QME500031, does not have the heat shield. The heat shield looks a bit like someone cut the bottom of a tin can and fitted it into the rubber joint assembly. No doubt the reason for the heat shield is due to the joint's proximity to the catalytic convertor, and I suspect that it isn't necessary on a LHD vehicle (I haven't checked to see what part is used on a left-hooker). I imagine that if you were to fit the un-shielded part to a Puma you'd destroy the rubber joint quite quickly - my original shaft seems to be failing after some 160k miles of cooking. The TDCI part QME500270 looks like this:- Click image to enlarge The TD5 part QME500031 looks like this:- Click image to enlarge Apart from the cup-shaped heat-shield thingy these are otherwise identical. The earlier collapsible columns (300TDi etc) look like this, and have seperate UJs:- Click image to enlarge (All photos pinched from Ebay listings). |

I have vague steering and have changed all the bushes and TRE's and steering ball joint.
Looking at the price im hoping its just a tighten on the steering box but... What was it that you felt you had to replace the lower shaft? Cheers wil |

I haven't replaced it yet, but have bought a replacement to fit.
The symptoms I have are not vagueness, but on a straight road at speed over bumps (especially those wretched yellow lines that are painted across the road on the approach to roundabouts in some places) I get a slight knock through the column, it's something you feel rather than see. This led me to waggle everything in the steering system I can to try to find some slop, and the only thing that didn't seem quite right is that if I hold the lower column and waggle it hard up-and-down (ie perpendicular to the shaft) I can feel a knock as one side or other of the rubber joint contacts the heat shield. I don't know if replacing it will make any difference of course! I did also decide that the drop-arm balljoint is a little slacker than it should be, although there is absolutely no hint of excess movement in it, so that will be replaced as well. |

Hi,
Have you resolve your problem?? is the lower shaft of td5 the same like puma (i have a lhd, so the head shield isn't necessary.. )? I have a similar noise like your, but the steering wheel also have play in e out.. it's look like if the steerig wheel bolt is loose (but is tight..) it came out for about 4 o 5 mm.. I can't understand if is the lower shaft assembly with the rubber joint broken or the upper shaft assembly. Is it normal if i disconnect the join from the upper and lower that upper still move out and in?? Thanks a lot Bye Matteo |

If the wheel moves in and out the fault must be in the upper shaft. Even if you remove the lower shaft completely the upper shaft should not do that.

I also had a very, very small knock but there was no play in any joints and it passed the MOT test and where I take it is very strict. Later I changed the steering damper because I used to get a bit of shimmy over pot holes and that cured the knock as well.

sorry it's me.....
a bit of back ground.....had completely new front axle, swivels arms, panhard rod, front dampers, steering damper and all with new bushes and I no doubt these are all in good working order and correctly fitted BUT.... this morning I experienced the worst case ever of wheel wobble (at least that's what it feels like). while slow to a stand still from about 20mph (not sudden stopping just average slowing down). I've had this before but from memory only prior to the above being replaced and again not very often. As has been suggested I need to look at the steering next...... as you may have seen else where there is still a knocking noise (albeit greatly reduced since doing the above works) which seems to come from the front o/s hub but I can't believe it's there in light of the above. other than the above feeling that the front wheels are loose the only other symptoms I can give are; clattering sound occasionally when on light throttle (but assume this is engine or transmission). steering occasionally going from light to heavy but haven't noticed this since above works and put it down to the replacement track rod as there was a sticking track rod end. at about 1750 rpm often get a vibration which seems to come from the gearbox. ? - help......please. metal parts of the steering hoses are well corroded - perhaps I should look to replace these in the first instance but clearly this isn't going to resolve any of the above....if there's any relatively cheap components that could be associated with the above I could perhaps do this at the same time? any thoughts / suggestions would be much appreciated. |

As you've had work undertaken to replace the axle and associated components recently if it were me I would start by double checking everything that was disturbed for security and make sure none of the fastenings have come loose. Steve.

thanks Steve.
I'll do that but I have to say I'm 99.99999% sure it's absolutely nothing to do with the recent works. The issues I'm having are either as they were prior to the works or reduced? I will be seeing the guys that did the works so a quick look over won't harm but as said I'm happy the issue (so bl00dy how!) lies elsewhere? I was going to suggest while replacing the front axle I replace everything else from the roof down.......but I've found rust on the roof too (around the alpine windows ) what next |

I'm no expert but here goes...
Vibration, could that be the typical Puma resonance characteristic? More of a drone really. Wobble, could that be swivel pre-load too light or non existent? |
