loss of power
Hi all,first post.
A mate is having a problem with his Td5.The problem being is that it will tick over fine but will lose power after only a couple of miles and cut out. When this happens it takes a short while before it will start again.During this period of non-starting one thing he notices is that the fuel guage drops to zero when cranking. He returns home with it as it seems pointless driving any further at the moment.
Things he has tried so far,
Changed fuel pump and pipes
main wiring loom
pump relay
I've told him i'll try this forum for advice before he goes any further.
Help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention it's on a '53 plate.

On my 2001 TD5 the fuel gauge will drop to zero when starting if the battery is low.

Check battery state and the battery connections and earth.

Also check for oil in the ECU loom (unless that is what you meant about changing the main loom ?)

TD5's do not like low batteries !

Thanks for the reply Bob.The loom was changed in the hope the fault would clear.I'll mention about the fuel guage/battery link.It just seems strange that it cuts out after a couple of miles,as if a component is breaking down under load?

Did he pull the red plug on the ECU and check for oil ?

Also, the crank sensor may be shot and/or missing it's spacer or not even connected ?

Turbo waste gate actuator may also be stuck.

All easy to check and fix.

No oil around the red plug.I will mention to him what you've suggested and post if successful or not.
Thanks very much for your help.

How about the ecu earth plus its integrity back to the battery?

Reading it again I would put money on the injector seals and washers. Replace them with quality ones and see what difference that makes.

Still got the problem. The ECU has now been away to be checked. Can we just assume that this is ok so we can look into other possible causes rather than me posting tomorrow night saying it hasn't improved as I'm able to help in the morning.
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Have you run a separate new Earth from the ecu Earth terminal stud to the battery neg terminal? Sounds bad earthy.

As a bit of a curveball, the guage dropping may be a bit of a red herring as the guages will drop when cranking as the circuit is cut much the same as your radio will go off when cranking. It may be the age old injector seals and washers and not an electrical thing after all. Well worth doing if they haven't been changed for a while.

He changed all the relays,4 yellow,2 black and it's running.I can only think that he may have changed the wrong relay thinking that he'd done the one for the fuel pump.
By changing them all, this time he did swap it.
It is running,as I've mentioned, but, it needs the accelerator pedal to the floorboard before it picks up.
Thanks to everyone who commented and any further thoughts would be appreciated.

Personally, I'd still be looking at replacing the injector seals and washers.
