1995 Defender 90 300 Tdi HT Alpine White

Brake Vacuum

Hello all,

Apologies if this has been discussed before, I have tried a search to no avail!

Had an obvious brake vacuum problem with my 300Tdi on Monday. Super-hard brake pedal with a lot of effort required to even remotely stop. Pump the brake pedal with engine off, and when started brake pedal still remains hard etc..

However, the thing randomly decided to sort itself out! Normal brake pressure, can stop where I want to, can lock the wheels on braking (no ABS) if required.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there anything specific I should check to minimise the chances of a re-occurence?

usual suspects are. Servo (cracks around 4 nuts)
Split in pipe
Or vac pump itself

I've had to do both servo and vac pump on mine, don't remember it being intermittent though My 109 thread

Maybe the vac pump can "stick" when it's failing.
Perhaps a split pipe has moved a bit and re sealed My 109 thread
