2.4 starter replacement.

My Puma occasionally leaves me stranded. The starter will go click three or four times then silence with all dash lights behaving as they should. I have a brand new Prestolite starter and was wondering if anyone has a step by step guide to swapping the unit over. There seems to be a lot of hoses and pipes in the way and the less disturbance the better. Can it all be done from the top or is it a dust in the eyes job again? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Easy to change though, just a lot in the way!
Only 2 bolts on the starter, you'll find one has a smaller threaded top to it, that Takes a 10mm nut, this is to hold part of the loom in place.

The starter simply sits in place on top of the bell housing with a foam gasket. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

done this some time ago, so from the head

Nothing complicated, a bit of from-the-top and from below, mainly depending on feeling and size of your hands when 'blind' reconnecting the cables to the starter.

First of all, disconnect battery.

then the solenoid cable, the main 12v+ feed (if i remember there are 2 cables on this connection, don't forget to fit the small one at installation)
Main cable will resist a bit to come off/put aside.

then dismantle starter from car 2 or 3 nuts (don't remember)

Clean all clutch dust from bellhousing, as it will kill your new starter

mount started in reverse order.

You'll need soms extensions to reach all the bolts and nuts so have your set ready.

When tightening the main cable it is always a good idea to put a second key on the inside not to prevent the stud turning and ripping off wires in the starter. don't overdo it.

Are you sure that it is the starter at fault, since the symptoms you described are more uisually attributable to either the passive immobiliser misbehaving or a poor connection on the main and/or ignition relays under the drivers seat (the latter usually characterised by the temp gauge indiicating maximum).

Generally these are easier to address than the starter which isn't very accessible.

Just spent 16 days in hospital and on daily visits for antibiotic drips I felt tackling this was out of my comfort zone. Dropped car off at GEMM yesterday morning and collected it today and all I can say is the engagement and speed and smoothness are in a different league. It wouldn't even spin in the vice. Get yours changed if it is at all lazy or clicking occasionally. £80 to fit which i thought was a great price too? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..
