I run a window blind company.
I started in the industry at about 18, mainly installing, then moved onto manufacturing until the opportunity came along to buy the company. The company I bought was mainly serving domestic customers but I'm slowly building the business and now supply to trade customers and also have some contracts for commercial and industrial supply and installations. It's very hard work, having to manufacture, install, generate new business, do the paperwork etc etc etc, I enjoy it most of the time and it can be rewarding. I regularly work from 6:00am to 7-8:00 pm, it's ok for me as I have no Children yet to get home too. |

I worked for 26 years as a retail manager with B&Q in the UK and Ireland ( in UK mostly stores along, around or near London's North Circular from Greenford to Beckton). Now I do the same job but with a West of Ireland based farmers cooperative society/dairy ingredients manufacturer.

I was a police officer for 30 years. I've worked locally in cars and vans but early in my career I was a police motorcyclist , that was fun, doing the job and blasting round the country on a BMW patrol bike .
For the last 15 years of service I was a police dog handler . I worked a general purpose dog( German shepherd ) and I had two sniffer springer spaniels, one searched for Drugs, currency and firearms residue and other spaniel was a proactive person scanning dog , he was used in airports, train stations and night clubs . The dog handling was such a rewarding job . I retired 4 years ago and was able to keep all three dogs ,hard work but they were part of my life for so long I coudent leave them . The shepherd died three years ago, one spaniel died six months ago , and I still have one mad but elderly spaniel . He loves his daily trip in the back of the Landy for his morning walk . I now have my own property maintenance business. I've never been busier,,, I specialise in Upvc bathroom wall and ceiling panels . I have numerous regular clients and do large and small jobs for them . I own and drive a VW T5 Kombi van for work , so with that and the landy , I recon I've got the best two vehicles I've ever owned !! That's all folks, time to get back to the Landy mags !!  Defender 90 Tonga green . My 2007 County .2.4Tdci puma .
Too many other Discos to mention, including a V8 petrol Disco3 and diesel Disco 3 !! ( All gone) |

Hi
I work in NDT i am a level 2 radiographer. I'm also qualified to work with vacuum ovens. But i have done all sorts from van driver to selling books...

I work for the local power company, on overhead powerlines. I get to drive all sorts of Defenders (110s, 130s, cherrypickers) and our 4x4 HIAB lorry. I spend most of my days off road, working on the lines. I am not yet fully qualified so still learning but I really enjoy it. It helps keep me reasonably fit too, which is a bonus. I am surprised nobody else seems to do this kind of thing, in many ways it is a Landrover enthusiasts dream job. 2011 110 USW

Ahh, Many a time I've sat behind or somewhere in the tailback behind Breedon trucks round the Westhill area...... wont quote any of the comments on a nice family friendly site like this

Well, I have always had some kind of job even while at school.
I used to do gardening work on Saturdays at my parents friends or family houses to help pay for things, which very quickly grew into working 7 days a week to earn money to save up for university. I went away to University to study Modelmaking which was a mixed experience for me, The course was great and the people I met on the whole were fantastic but I knew I was in the wrong job. I sank most of the money I had saved up for university into buying my 110 which I then used for doing more heavy duty gardening and light agricultural work helping local farmers with odd jobs or on really big gardens to pay for the 110 and university. After doing some work experience on a few films I decided my interests lay elsewhere and spent a lot of time and effort in getting fit for military service with an eye for joining the Royal Engineers in the Heavy recovery squad (driving into a battlefield with a tank tow truck to pick up a broken down tank weirdly appealed to me) only to have my hopes dashed and crushed when I was told I would never be able to join the services due to a food allergy. It was crushing as if it was a fitness thing I could work at it and get better, nothing you can do can change genetics so with a great deal of regret I started looking around for other things. After a few dead end offers I got lucky and I found my self covering for a friend at a fairly local Waterjet Cutting firm while he left on paternity leave. 2 and a bit years later I'm still working there 
We cut everything and anything (except lead or tempered glass) and have a huge variety of clients from Rolls Royce, to local tilers, to armaments companies right the way round to preserved railways and artists. I enjoy the challenge and variety of what we get coming through the door. Some days I will be cutting tiles down to size, the next I will be doing very intricate jewellery parts, the same day exhaust flanges for a vintage racing car. Anything from cutting out 0.5mm stainless for training sniffer dogs all the way up to 100mm thick steel plates for steam locomotive brake gear! Every day is a new challenge and I really enjoy my work. Crikey Shaggydog, a food allergy? Given the most popular food in the cookhouse, you must be allergic to chips. Harsh. That or the flavour of 'boil in the bag' which doesn't really qualify as food.
But very sorry to hear it, you'd have had a great time. Is there no civilian equivalent? Can you not qualify as a driver and then look at doing recovery in the oil industry? They find themselves in lots of dodgy places if you're after more of a buzz.... Monsieur Le Grenadier

Grenadier, I too had a knock back trying to join up, mine was eyesight, back in the days when laser surgery was not allowed and you had to be able to see a certain distance without the specs
 I did manage to join the TA (as was) as it was easier to pass that one! I also tried to get into the oil industry, even paid for my own offshore certificate and training, but no one would touch me as I hadn't ever been to sea as a career! ah well, that's all in the past now. I am now Divisional Sales Manager for a Belgian company selling posh designer radiators I cover the South East, it means I spend a lot of time in the car, about 1000 miles a week is fairly average but I don't have someone clocking me in and out and am fairly autonomous so its not all bad. |
