Apologize if this has been discussed here already, but I noted that there is some discrepancies regarding
oil amount and recommendations for this 6-speed Getrag MT82 transmission between Ford and Land Rover. There are complains about the MT82 transmission in Ford Mustang and Ford issued a 77 page report about this and some other issues. Short version of report here and in there is a link to the whole story. http://mustangsdaily.com/blog/2011/11/09/f...nsmission/ Ford changed the lubrication spec for this transmission: http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/attachment...1417969830 Also Ford specify 2,6l oil and Land Rover say amount in change is 2,2l? The case look just same size. I drained almost 3l oil from my MT82. Ford specify what they call Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid, XT-11-QDC. I believe that this oil is sold by Ford in Europe with P/N 1547953. This oil has Ford specification WSD-M2C200-D2. Land Rover manual specify Castrol BOT 130M oil that also has WSD-M2C200-D2 specification. Castrol Syntrans FE75W has WSS-M2C200-D2 specification. Also Ford specify to add 27ml of XL-18 additive to MT82 transmission in oil change? On US Ford Mustang forums people write that there is definite change in transmission when oil and additive is changed to the right one. WSS-M2C200-D2 = 75W80 WSD-M2C200-D2 = 75W90 Am I just stirring up some mud? Brgds, Juha '96 300Tdi 90 '07 Puma 90 |

You're overfilling in that case! May or may not cause problems.

For someone that doesn't know.
Are the boxes in the Mustang & the Defender the same, do they have the same bearings, torque rating etc etc, because if they are different, and have different operating parameters, they would maybe require a different sort of oil. So, the question I would ask is, (a) how are they different, & (b) what is common? Pickles. |

Just a s a note, the MT82 box isn't a spill fill box. It takes 2.6 litres and on oil change the method is to refill with 2.2l. I would suggest that land rover have put some engineering and research into the grading of the oil. It is very rare that oil grading is incorrect from factory spec.

It would be interesting to see if the additive improved the defender box.
Anyone brave enough?! |

Landrover boxes are manufactured in th UK. The Mustang 'boxes maybe manufactured in China but they are not "Chinese knock off" boxes. It is absurd to suggest that Ford would buy counterfeit gearboxes! |

Maybe you should do some research, the Yanks are rebuilding their Knock off box's with original Getrag parts once out of warranty, going by the responses on the Mustang Forum no one has had one last, even when driven easy.In Australia we have Ford Rangers and Mazda BT-50 ute's,they are the same vehicle with the same Chinese gearbox's,even the ZF auto's they use are Chinese and the TDCi's are made in Thailand, both Ford and Mazda have warranty claims left and right and center. The Chinese boxes are built by either Getrag (Jiangxi) Transmission Co. Ltd. or Dongfeng Getrag Transmission, both of which are legitimate joint venture companies. They are not "knock-offs", a term which specifically means a counterfeit product.
They may be crap, but they're not counterfeit, which was my point. |

Aren't the Defender boxes made at Getrag's factory in Halewood? Getrag has a joint venture structure with Ford - GFT which stands for GETRAG FORD Transmissions. GETRAG and GFT have two thirds of GETRAG (Jiangxi) Transmission Co. Ltd. One third is held by the Jiangling Motors Company Group. I think it likely that the Mustang boxes come from this setup. The other company - Dongfeng GETRAG Transmission Co. Ltd does not have any Ford involvement, so I'm guessing is unlikely to be involved in Mustang gearboxes. Getrag was bought by Magna International in 2015. The significance of that? Magna international also own the Magna Steyr company that JLR have recently contracted to build vehicles for them under contract in Austria. It's a small world... Click image to enlarge Happy to be corrected on this but I think the MT82 box is based on the box designated 6MTI500 by Getrag: http://www.getrag.com/media/products/manua...0_MT82.pdf 6 = number of gears MT = manual transmission I = In line 500 = maximum torque I don't get all the knocking Chinese production, as one blog/site most eloquently put it: "Getrag MT82 Transmission, engineered in Germany and built in China. Note: some posters in AllFordMustangs.com expressed some ugly prejudice about the supposed inability of Chinese workers to properly build these transmissions, and expressed their opinion that the “American built” Tremec transmissions would be superior because they were built in the USA by union workers. Wrong – the Tremecs including the TR6060 are built in Queretaro, Mexico. Ignorance and prejudice don’t help here." And - when you get right down to the actual issues: http://mustangsdaily.com/blog/2011/11/09/f...nsmission/ most appear to be design related. What makes me most envious though, is the full disclosure details available under US law. If you skip through details from the full report, it's amazing what is in there: http://mustangsdaily.com/blog/wp-content/u...sponse.pdf In particular, the change log detailing such stuff as: Fifth/Sixth gear synchro 09/07/2010 Changed surface finish specification for the synchronizer, added double shot blast. Address customer comments of "notchiness" and grinding for 5th gear shifts. |

Interesting, but the article is more than two years old. The Bronco did get the 7 speed box. Darren

I wonder if the bellousing and size are the same and if a 7 speed would fit in a puma defender.
