Somewhat predictably I am a farmer, of sheep. However not always. I started off age 13 with a Saturday job with the local steel fabrication guru which turned into an apprenticeship, then I went to college and studied mechanical engineering.
From college I landed in coal mining for a firm of consultants doing both subsidence surveys and engineering work. That was for 12 years till the boss died and I was made redundant due to the company consolidating. From there I went into retail, for halfords as an expert fitter and then motorworld as a store manager then came the financial crisis. I went next to the public sector for Bradford City council but that was only a short contract. Next it became apparent that dad's health was suffering so I started doing earlies to have afternoons free to farm, initially driving and now even earlier cleaning, giving me all day to farm. We are not the biggest farm in the parish more a boutique enterprise producing super high quality commercial breeding stock, which is I suspect going to be the new industry standard model. I just don't see how, as customers increasingly look for sustainability and traceability in their purchases, the Australian model ranch farms of multiple hundreds or thousands of head of stock can truly be as transparent as people want. Or I'm wrong and people don't really care so long as the product is available and cheap. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon. |

I'm a plasterer.
Someone has to get their hands dirty. 
Actually,that's my trade. But 12 years ago moved to the South of France & set up my own company specializing in renovating old usually stone property's. |

They call us DTM's (Driver Team Managers) up here just now but that may change now a new Franchise operator is in place. Personally if I had a choice the high speed ones are less traumatic as it is just bits with no real recognisable parts (red mist) unlike the low speed ones. Plus we leave the retrieval to the BTP but it is still a bit gory walking through the bits with the relieving driver to start duty of care with the driver who had the fatality.  |

Given the pretty wide range of work and status ie retired, self employed what have you, plus location just what is it in people that draws us all to Defenders.. apart from we're all obviously a bit 'odd'

I dont know what it is exactly but it makes me smile everytime I drive my Defender ! I think the defender is the last of the meccano cars ,its classless and the owner can customise at their will.I also think folk like a car that can go just about anywhere and needs a lot of TLC and as a British person we do like a good moan and the defender does provide a platform to exercise your moaning gland

Well after 11 yrs nursing in the RAF, then 3 yrs on neuro & general intensive care units, gaining a DipHE, BSc, & MSc in nursing, ...I do a 4 week course and that gives me a rather non-descript job title of 'medic' when offshore ... ... 
It doesn't cover all the other things that we do ... like showing the odd visiting beach engineers around when they get lost on the plant ...

Myself and my wife currently run a business financing commercial vehicles for small businesses , we operate as a local representative for Vanarama and work from home 9-5 Mon-Fri and take all bank holidays off.
We will very soon need to move out of home and set up an office , maybe deal in some second hand vans and we will soon have a car offering as well. Previous to this we ran an organic veg box scheme for 10 years which we sold in 2012 , we had 8 vans and 13 staff and delivered to 2000 people a week in and around Hampshire. Proir to that we ran a whole food store on the outskirts of Winchester but had to close this when our then landlord sold our shop ( we could't afford it ) to buy a boat. My wife and I have worked together for 25 years in 3 different businesses now and I wouldn't change that . If money were no object I would have a large chunk of Hampshire, 2000 acres if that isn't too greedy and grow a variety of crops for direct retail sale in a dedicated shop and on-line . All organic and as sustainable as possible , of course I would need a small fleet of Defenders to accomplish this. When I left school I joined the Army Catering Corp so have all my City and guild qualifications as a chef , I have worked in several hotels , pubs and restaurants to earn hard cash when business has been slow but luckily that is no longer the case. |

I work in contract rock crushing and travel the UK to various quarries and get to play on all sorts of big tonka toys like this brand new Komatsu wheel loader. And yes my 110 comes with me
My career has been varied having been a agency plant operator for couple years working on all sorts of sites, a recruitment agency looking after 110 rental properties for our foreign workers plus the minibus fleet, also been a courier for most of the big names for 10 years both employed then having my own vans, been a postman, barman and a warehouse boy also None of which have any relation to my uni degree in Maritime Studies at southampton institute
