Hi Glyn,
Could you explain how to check the resistance and what I should read in it?? I like to learn as much as I can, and know the voltage check and have used continuity to establish earth positions when installing electrical things in the landy. How would I check continuity on that switch? Between the switch and ground? If you could explain how the resistance one works I would appreciate it!! Never knew how to use that function on my tester I understand what you mean about the voltage. Wasn't sure if for some reason the lamp on the dash might use lower voltage and has somewhere been stepped down?? If not, I definitely have a problem!! Would you say the switch is maybe faulty?? |

Aaaahhh Glyn this is where we are missing each other, and why I cant understand it so well Your paint drawing makes perfect sense, but in the case of my landy two things I should have mentioned:
- There is only one wire and one probe on the switch - The switch's positions are reversed, when I pull the handbrake up (engaged), the switch is released, and when I put the handbrake down (released brake), the switch is depressed. Is yours different?? Also I didn't know the handbrake light also stays on until a certain speed, I read somewhere the ABS one stays on for a bit. If all the advice on here don't fix it, I'll unplug it and take a drive Lets see what happens |

Ahhhhh, my bad I was reading the diagram back to front.
Have you checked that you get 12v down the wire when it is dissconnected? The switch is on the earth side of the light so all the switch does is earth the whole circuit. I know the taking the wire off works as when I picked mine up from new I was a bit concerned that there was no handbrake warning light whenever I put it on at the traffic lights etc....... when I got home I had a look underneath and the cable was off . I havent checked the voltage on the wire when disconnected no, but if the switch is on the earth side of the light, surely I shouldn't get a voltage when reading between it and another earth?
Aha, that might do it! I'll pluck the cable off first, and if it doesn't switch the light off, then we know it must be an ABS issue Gettin somewhere!! |

Yes and no...... My trade is RADAR technician.... which does involve 0.1 volt changes etc, but since moving across to armoured vehicles it is all about whole figures..... things like switches should either be 12v or 0v, but vehicles have loads of residual voltage all over them caused by all sorts of things.......... when I first moved across to armoured I was chasing faults all over vehicle because I had a reading (0.1-0.4v) where there wasn't anything really there . Just for lesson time: Voltage = Current x Resistance.... soo tyou would need to take into account the resistance in the switch, wires, dash bulb etc. Glyn |

Okay got it, so you're saying that I should get a voltage then on the wire when unplugged from the switch even though its an earth?

The wire is the 12v supply, but because there is no earth the bulb won't light.... all the switch does is switch the end of it to earth.

Check you out Glyn Swallowed a thesaurus on electrical principles have we? You'll be saying things like Power (Watts) = Voltage X Current next! From Radar (Fairy) to real electrician(Dogf*cker) (Bracketed names are Air Force terminology)...Bout time you started working for a living! I too have made a transition from Hercules aircraft to:- Loving every minute! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Dunno what you mean, in the Army RADAR is God's trade! Anyone who can understaand the concept of waveguides ROCKS. Aircraft technicians are just a bunch of spotty faced geeks. What is the concept behind the 'Dogf*cker' name? I would love to work on that beast though! Glyn |

Tim,
Thanks so much for your advice, I found that loose cable just hanging under there with a ring lug on and all, but not earthed. Other two were earthed on the transfer case like you said. Reattached the earth and handbrake light sorted! HOWEVER: Now my TC light is on along with my ABS light. Took it for a drive up to about 60kph and lights don't switch off... Suspect it might be the insulation thats chaffed off somewhere as mentioned in this thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic2394.h...p;start=15 Glyn, It seems that the switch on the handbrake is not faulty, checked it now with handbrake up and down, dash light switches on and off as it should. Still cant explain the voltage readings I got though!! Not gonna worry about that now though, its working... Thanks for your inputs!! Now to get rid of ABS and TC lights... *sigh* |

Our ABS light takes a little while to turn off - about 15-30 seconds after starting, but assume that's okay?! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

Yep, expected behaviour. You only need to worry when it doesn't go off |

Glad you got one problem sorted Beefmaster! Sounds like the ABS unit still isn't happy though, I take it you've checked all the fueses etc? Hopefully it's just a chaffed cable...
Are any of the ABS or TC lights flashing when you turn the igniton on or start the car? Cheers, Tim |
