2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Stornoway Grey
Slight over rev when changing gear & in Low range
Hello All,

I have recently bought a 90 station-wagon puma, past defenders have been 200, 300 series and TD5 so this is my first puma.

I use the landie for towing 80% of the time 3.5/4 ton.

I have noticed when changing gear mostly in lower gears when i clutch and change gear the revs do not drop of but do the opposite a slight jump circa 100 or 200 revs.

When in low range especially when im reversing trailer, when i want to find the biting point of clutch for accurate maneuvering the engine will rev up on her own accord. I assume this is some form of anti stall business!! but it is frustrating when i do not touch the accelerator the vehicle revs and i then need to clutch etc

I hope this makes a bit of sense. I basically want to know is this the way this puma drives or is there a download etc to sort?

I also would like some advise on a good tune for towing.

Many thanks Jeremy

In low first the revs rise to about 1000 and stay there, even trying to slow it a bit on the brakes don't work, it just keeps on going. I must admit it does make super-slow manouvering quite hard work.

idle jack, to overcome the low speed in 1st low which LR deemed was too slow. takes it upto 1100rpm. Cheers

In addition to anti stall and throttle ramp in low-range, mine (2008) had the same issue in high-range. I understand this was achieved using a switch on the clutch to increase revs between gears to reduce transmission shunt - it didn't really work too well and made it sound like I couldn't drive properly Laughing

Successive clutch upgrades and maybe newer engine management patches over the last 2 years, and it doesn't do it any more - I wondered what year is your Defender? 1953 80

mine does the same in high range, like you say as if you don't take your foot off the acelator to change gear, mine is 2010
