The clonk comes from all the drive line slack from the gearbox through axles to shafts and driven members. The whole vehicle is slapped together with mismatched parts resulting in most suffering from it.
The stealer here changed the rear half shafts and that helped a lot but 50K later it was nearly as bad so I had an independent workshop fit after market shafts and driven members. The clonk has virtually gone but can still be induced from the gearbox area if changing a bit quick. Next thing will be a new output shaft although the stealer reckoned they'd changed that as well. But who believes stealers...? Might be better off getting into debt by buying a D4 as they don't seem to suffer from all this crap. AlanH. |

Hi Alan - good tip on the rear half shafts, many thanks.
I like your suggestion about the d4, but unfortunately I am already in debt from buying the defender!! |

If you've read through the myriad of threads both here and elsewhere on the subject you'll also know that driving style also has a bearing on the amount of crashing and bashing you can hear in the driveline too. You'll also know that the amount of slack can vary a lot between vehicle to vehicle straight from the factory and is cumulative. If you get a good one it's grand but get one with a bit of slack and this can quickly be magnified into some alarming noises by aggessive clutch use / too quick / too slow gearchanges as the various components [splines, diffs, bearings, UJ's etc] bed in and wear.
They should all be the same but sadly they are not and never have been, getting a dealer to investigate and effectively rectify is the knack for too many will try the old "but they are all like that Sir". If they try that line yet there is clearly a problem ask the workshop supervisor to accompany you on a drive and then get him to drive it and see if he can do it without the clonks and bangs. Alternatively get them to let you try other Defenders ...I'll bet you a quid that they're all different Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. Thanks Steve - hunters in Chester have already tried that line on me but I am pressing them on it whilst the car is in for other warranty work.
Driving style yes - if I drive incredibly carefully then going through the gears 1-2-3 I can eradicate it, but 6-5 / 5-4 and just rolling back on the throttle seems to be impossible to get rid of it. I just feel that if this continues then something expensive will wear out or break probably when the warranty has just expired! |
