After four years it might be too late to resurrect this thread, but here goes...
For those cars that do not have dim-dip functionality, is it simply the resistor which is missing? Or are there other wires and/or relays involved? Ant. |

There's an additional relay (R126) that lives behind the instrument binnacle, it provides the switching in/out of circuit of the 0.87Ω resistor and also the electronic logic to control it, with extra feeds from the lighting and ignition switches.

The dim-dip relay is the red one on the right hand side.

Unlike the TD5, on the Puma I think that the only difference is the presence/absence of the resistor, The only useful thing I have ever found about having dim-dip (disconnecting the resistor was one of the first things I did on my Puma) is that when the inevitable happens and the light switch melts, you can short out the two wires to the resistor and the dip beam then comes on (full power) with sidelights. It is quite a handy get-you-home fix. I can think of absolutely no other good points about the system at all, it was an idea conceived by morons, and removing the UK's ill-conceived requirement was one of the few good things that the EU has done for the British motorist! (You can probably tell I have a low opinion of dim-dip!) |

I don't think it's just a shorting link though. And besides, a lot of people would short the incorrect terminals....

It is just a link, inside the relay housing is literally just a small piece of metal that links the two terminals.
I bought one from Billing years ago and took it apart before fitting. A piece of wire does the same job, but the 'relay' is far neater |

And resurrecting this thread again .. we have an intermittent headlight problem - occasionally dipped headlights will just go out. At that point you can't switch them to full beam, but you can get them on full beam by pulling the stalk back.
Thinking to take a look at the dim dip relay and replace it, I took the dash apart but there was no sign of the same salmon pink relay. Are they fitted to later models? We have an 09MY 110 SW. 2009 110 XS Station Wagon |

I have just had a problem where my headlights were on when switched off,they went off when I turned the ignition off though.
I Unplugged the red relay located behind the instrument binacle & shorted across the terminals fed by the red/blue wires with a short legnth of wire with spade conectors on either end.* Problem sorted. Marc |

That sounds a lot like the problem I had a few years ago with the indicator stalk/ flasher switch on the steering column. Turned out that the switch housing was slightly melting and the contacts were floating about. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Wish I had knew about this thread years ago.
In the 7 years I've had my Puma 90 I never knew about this! I do have it as when sidelights are on and engine running the headlights are lit but not as bright. So I assume this is the dim, dipped one up and then full beam. Only I didn't used to notice it on when I had OE Quadoptics but when I swapped to Crystals I seemed to get this dim / dip feature. I'm fitting Noldens soon with Land Reigziger loom, shall I remove it or will it have no effect? I'm tending to think with loom and LED's I'd get dipped beam on sidelights. (Due to resistor switching but bypassing resistor.) Dipped as normal then main beam. Obviously do not want dipped beam on with sidelights. I'll have the sidelight loom fitted anyway, as the Noldens I've got are the position light type. So I can see if I don't remove this resistor thing I'd have issues.
