Hello Dog Lovers,
I have been considering getting a dog for a while now and given the number of you dog owners out there, notably some with many at one time or quite a few owned over the years, I was wondering if I could ask for a little advice? I am looking for a medium sized dog, short hair, obedient and not a big barker. I walk and run extensively in the mountains, and the dog will likely remain with me throughout my working day. So I am thinking of a black lab. Medium body, medium/long leg length. Much like the following (Many thanks to Romadog, Leonski and Stanley for your beautiful, inspirational dogs, I hope you don't mind my reposting their photos) Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge So, my questions: First, can anyone advise, based on what I have said, whether a bitch or dog is better (both would be neutered)? Second, can anyone recommend a good (specialist) lab breeder that is ideally KC registered, does all the key checks and has a number of years breeding or a number of litters registered, perhaps with a Studbook entered dog or two? I have come across Mrs F Mount of Canterbury (KC Breeder) if anyone has any experience of her? Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Many thanks. PS, part of me really likes Border Terriers......any thoughts? My ONLY comment would be... get a dog that does NOT MOULT!!
Seriously... I have had 2 Labs... great companions but DRIVE ME MAD with the never ending amount of hair they shed ALL the time! It gets everywhere and ruins any ideas you may have of keeping your house/car 'tidy'.. But, for many, this is not an issue. Up to you mate... Dogs ARE great and I look forward to getting another moult free version in the future!!! YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

A Lab would be perfect for your lifestyle , but then I'm biased!
The Kennel Club website will have a list of breeders and don't forget the rescue option ! Also look in the shooting/sporting press too for more working types |

Click image to enlarge my labs moult 2 times a year usually just after and just before winter. lasts 4-5 weeks and there is a lot of hair. doesn't bother me one bit. never need to pay for hair cuts for them! lol I've got a working and a show lab. the show lab was never keen on running with me! he would manage a few miles and that was him! lol BUT we later found out he has problems with an elbow which didn't help. have a read of this http://www.thelabradorsite.com/running-with-your-labrador/ My 109 thread my youtube channel Last edited by g-mack on 17th Aug 2015 2:34pm. I Love Labradors but get yourself a Border collie, very intelligent, do not tire easily, very easy to train, one of the most loyal and faithful dogs there are. Most Collies cast their coat twice a year rather than constantly moult.
Plus even a top bred Collie will cost you a fraction of what a Labrador will and if you are not bothered about pedigree papers will cost you about a tenth. Plus relatively free from problems and will not cost half of what a Lab will to feed. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

I can see this one running and running [pun possibly intended ]
If it's a Lab you are after [and I've had a few ] my advice would be to do some research about the potential health issues of the breed and ensure both parents have been checked for signs of inherited issues. The breed can range from laid back bordering on lazy to pocket rockets bred with Field Trials in mind so again do your research into breeding and make sure you go back several generations. I could go on and on but don't underestimate costs in both time, money ...and did I mention time? avoid getting suckered into paying a lot for something with attributes you don't need and in a colour which carries a cost premium simply due to the fact of being the current "in" thing. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

Well I thought oh another doggy thread wander what thats about ?
Thank you for my help........what have I done? Oh yeah they are lovely aren't they ? Yes Labs are lovely, hairy and a pain at times, but so are humans Two of mine are KC reg'd. The youngest, black one has a lovely family tree with lots of FtCh but he had or has Panosteitis, a growing pain condition. Google it. He was first thought to have strained his leg from doing a mad run about in a paddock. After lots of getting better and then not, and without having expensive x-rays we came to conclusion that he has Panosteitis. This has more of an effect on us than him and as long as we remember to not let him have hours of'chase me' with another mad dog, he is ok. This condition doesnt last and will go away. Oh by the way he has a good set of b :censored:cks which he will be able to use for a reasonable fee So you can have all the correct boxes ticked and still have issues so it can be a lottery, but always best to get the best you can. Before getting the black boy I tried the route of a rescue dog and although they all look and sound lovely, you are taking a greater chance.......... My eldest however was bought at 1yr old from an advert in the paper and she was an excellent beating dog, hunted well, and wish she was capable to still do it at the age of 14, but her body isnt as young as her mind thinks it is ! |
