I'd say hybrid turbo. And let us know how it does long term, so I know what to do next year... 😄

The engine in mitigation is well proven, with many giving sterling service. I too have 'tinkered' and it has apart from the EGR Valve never missed a beat in 7 years. 'Tinkering' can often compromise the reliability as appears in this case perhaps?
Hybrid (if you've a grand lying about) or standard turbo, faces skimmed if possible and try to keep to any recommended torque figures. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Ouch!
Do you think it's related to the knocking noises you had recently? I'm afraid mine will come out in pieces as well... |

I don't think this is directly associated to the knocking, unless the knocking is the engine Incorrectly fuelling, making the engine raise the exhaust gas temperatures.
I think the main problem is that it's a poor quality undersized unit for the Defender. For many people who don't do high milage, and long runs it is fine, but ask it to drive at a constant motorway speed it chucks its dummy out. Plan at the moment is to monitor it and eventually get a second vehicle for the motorway/long drives. Andy |

^^ Myself 78k km, standard engine, so no tune, once in a while long highway drives of many hundreds of km at sustained 120 km speeds, possibly like this summer in very high ambient temps. Smooth as can be, why would these Ford Transit engines be unreliable? If you show a little respect and don't push the engine and its components, especially with a tune, don't think so.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw Last edited by ericvv on 18th Aug 2015 5:08am. 48 thou miles is not many miles done yet.
I doubt mine will make it to the 168 thou miles my Td5 did. |
