A few modifications over the weekend:

Removed the 2 forward facing rear seats to give me decent space, save a bit of weight, and cut down on some of the rattles too. I covered how to do this in a thread that can be found here:

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39220.html

I also fitted all my lovely RDX LED clear lights all round that I bought from Bolt on Bits at Billing. Mine already had clear lights at the front for indicators but I wanted LED ones, to match my lovely LED headlamps I've bought.

Apart from the rear fog and reverse light, all the crimps are done and you just assemble the plugs together and fit with all new screws. The fog and reverse required me to crimp but that was easy enough. The silver reflective insides of the LEDs make it seem much fresher and brighter.

My next job is to fit the KBX grille and headlamp surrounds (Java Black standard mesh) and see if I like it as is or whether I colour code it to Stornoway Grey. Then I can fit the new headlamps and stainless steel bezels and wire in the Halo lights. 2016 D4 HSE

More tinkering tonight. My KBX grille and headlamp surround is all here so time to do some prep work.

Removed the existing grille panel, headlamp surround, lights and removed grille from the air con panel. This revealed some rust but not too bad, so I treated it all with Kurust, and then painted later with satin hammerite black. Also took the opportunity to paint the front chassis legs and crossmember and under the front bumper, anywhere that needed some paint.

Then I decided to fix the manky looking intercooler grille, drilled out the rivets and rubbed it down, then sanded it down and etch primed it. Next it had 3 coats of gloss black paint. It will get a couple of coats of lacquer before it is refitted.

Next I created the extension wires for my LED Halos by splicing into the sidelight feeds and soldering and heat shrinking the fly leads in.

Meanwhile, back in the garage, I am always prepping little bits to use later. here I have sprayed some stainless steel screws in black as I'm always finding places to replace them, and also colour coding the new rivets which will secure the intercooler grille back on the panel. I did these in Stornoway. once fitted each will get a dab of paint from a touch up pen to hide the aluminium centres. (Attention to detail is my middle name!)

Finally, I decided the new KBX Java grille would only look right with a nice new black and silver Land Rover oval badge, so here it is all glued on and ready to go.

Offered up the newly painted intercooler grille and riveted it to the air con panel. Used my home made Stornoway colour coded rivets, and then afterwards dabbed them with a colour pen.

Top tip: When riveting near painted panels, the rivet gun has a tendency to jump as it snaps off the pin, and can hit your paint and damage it. So, I get a piece of fabric and push the rivet pin through it to cover the paintwork,

Then I fixed the KBX grille in place with fir trees (I hate these things but seems the only way with the air con panel)

Replaced the air con panel and stood back to admire my handywork. I think the black lower grille compliments the KBX and the black mesh behind it, and certainly looks 100% better than it did all corroded and old.

I have the same problem with mine. I was thinking about getting a replacement (e.g. Bolt on Bits, Zunsport) but restoring the original looks like a much more sensible idea!

Did you have any difficulty drilling out the original rivets? I'd be worried about damaging the surrounding paintwork - any more of your Top Tips for how to avoid this?
