It's a safe thing to do, don't worry.

Use a large enough drill to take the heads off. I found the body remained in the panel but instead of trying to drill the whole thing out and risking drill slip and damage it's easier and less damaging to use pliers to pull it out the remains from the back side. 2016 D4 HSE

if any of the rivets have a longer steel pin left after " popping " , it can make drill run off centre

personally I would grind off back of rivets flat , remove grill , carefully punch rivet heads out carefully from the back

Grinding them off seems much more work, they are soft aluminium and once the head has spun off (very easy) and back body just pulls out.

Grinding could easily result in panel damage, and these are only GRP. 2016 D4 HSE

its ok drilling head off as long as the steel pin inside the rivet is recessed enough not to push drill off centre , or as your drilling the rivet spins which both could result in paint damage

at least working from back there is less chance of any paintwork damage

grind the BACK off the rivet NOT the head

Postie arrived in time for me to do some minor tinkering and putting the face back on the Defender today, finally got to fit my lovely LED lights with Halos. Very Happy So happy

Here's some photos of the end result, along with a snow cowl too. The front end looks much better IMHO now, and you can tell I am following an X-Tech style grey and black theme.

Looks much better in my opinion, always preferred black details over the Brunel/ silver. Painting the wheels black next then? Whistle

These were from Flatdog, they're not Speakers, cheaper but got to be better than the stock Halogens. 2016 D4 HSE

A few new bits in the post today to help with future upgrades.

Full stainless steel bolt kit for all the doors, rear tub and front bumper. I shall gradually do these as I do the Dinitrol and have to remove for that job. 2016 D4 HSE

Dinitrol kit and ACF50 now ordered, along-with new "DEFENDER" bonnet letters in gloss black to complement the grey/black look.

Always had jobs that require a heat gun and never had one so bought a Silverline one last night at 7pm from Toolstation for £13.48. It was delivered for free by 9am this morning, absolutely brilliant service. Thumbs Up 2016 D4 HSE

Funny how's the smallest thing can make such a difference.

The original Brunel "LAND ROVER" bonnet lettering was lost on the Stornoway paint and my car is going along the theme of the grey and black contrast, so I purchased a gloss black "DEFENDER" badge kit from Powerful UK and fitted it today. Takes half an hour tops. Used a heat gun to get the old letters off using the plastic wedge scraper Powerful supplied in the kit, then cleaned up the adhesive with the drill and a toffee wheel. Cleaned up with spirits and then did a Meguiars 3 stage paint process on the bonnet leading edge while it was clear of letters. (Soon I'll do the entire car)

Fitted the letters in the cardboard template (making sure not to place too low past the ridge line) and final clean up. Looks SO much better.
