Hi Sasha
Like you I come from the medical side of this aspect undertanding the basic mech's of injury and have treated casualties from many road accidents over the years ...
From my understanding the Subaru may have faired better if it had hit a car with a crumple zone as both cars would have disapated the force and the impact would have been absorbed and shared between the 2 crumple zones .. thus reducing the shearing/deceleration force on the passengers - but at this speed I would still expect serious injuries in both vehicles
However hitting the defender was like hitting a stone wall as it absorbed minimal shock thus transmitting the majority of the force into the subaru so in the actual event the defender was the safer car for the defender occupants only.

I was told by a police crash investigator some time ago that If a car is a write off in an accident and the occupants live - then it's done it job correctly ... regardless who was at fault ... food for thought!
(but give me a defender any day!!) Whistle

cheers,, clarified it for me thanks

rear damage from a shunt.
Good to see your 'fix' for the rear step, dgardel.
I have always been worried by the rear corner protection on my 90 - so I purchased a pair of Equipe 4x4 Bumperettes from Milan - Boy, are they strong and good looking!!!
Whoever hits my rear from the side is going to get substantial damage on the vehicle.

Hi All,
Just sent off for my new 110 step/bumper thingy like you have on here Dgardel - ordered from the same place as well!
Hope it's easy to fit!! Whistle

Should be a good addition to the waggon as it will save the bumps from the odd corsa and pinto, and give Jules a place to put her feet when cooking up our dinner in the back! - Plus it will look smart!! Cool

I love birthdays!!

How much ground clearance / approach angle do you lose with one of those?

After driving 4000 kms through the rugged north west without so much as a dent or flat tyre, this is what happened to my Defender parked outside of my own house ten days ago...

I'm pleased to say that the other car, a 12 year old Holden Nova, was totally demolished (no injuries) and the alcohol drenched owner was reduced to a blubbering mess. Will be repaired in February, assessed at $20,000 AUD worth of damage.

Cheers,
Rick.

not sure yet but it looks as it will be a better angle than the standard tow bar - but will let you know after I've fitted mine ..or some one with one will before then I expect! Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

4-0.
A few years back some jerk rammed the back of my Td5 in the middle of the night and drove off. I say 'drove off' because he left most of the front of his car behind. I didn't have any extra bumpers or gear on the back and the sum total damage to mine was a dish-dent in the crossmember (only slightly noticeable) and a bent mudflap bracket.

5-0.
Whilst stuck in a long queue of traffic, the chap right behind me in his nice new jag decided he'd had enough and pulled out aggressively to jump a few places down the line. Unfortunately he misjudged it and caught my rear O/S corner. I felt the tug as he hit me and instinctively applied the brakes to the horrible sound of grating metal. We both got out and to his complete embarrassment (he was quick to admit it was his fault) observed that he'd can-opened the side of his car on mine. No damage to me other than a slightly scuffed crossmember to show for it. I didn't even submit a claim.

I know there's no comparing a modern car's safety to our crude boxes but in general shunts, the defender hasn't half saved me a lot of time, cost and paperwork! One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
+ New Defender 110 First Edition

6-0

I had a 17 year old who'd just passed his test run into the back of me when I was stopped at some traffic lights. I think he was doing about 50mph when he hit my multi height towbar in his mothers ford KA.

I got out to have a look at the damage to see my towbar had stopped an inch short of his windscreen, the wings had popped off the engine and gearbox was on the floor. A quick inspection of mine to find I had some red paint flexs on my towbar. Naturally I just brushed them off and left him with the police. Whistle

I did ask him if he was alright, to which i replied you won't when your mother gets hold of you! Rolling with laughter Russell
