Looks like I have just joined this leaky breather pipe club. Yes I had filled to to the top but it never leaked before when I had filled up in the same way. Today it was quite a substantial leak straight after filling and when I got home I had a look and could see where the diesel apparently had been leaking from the top of the tank.
March 13 build and 27K miles so talking to the dealer tomorrow about a warranty repair , hopefully in time for the Defender Tribute in Anglesey on Saturday Cheers all, John. 2.2 90 XS 88" Series One Old Norton Minerva |

Good luck John, hopefully they won't change the fuel filter instead of the actual job.

Click image to enlarge Eric[/quote] Bit of a thread revival. As preventive maintenance just over 2 years ago I let my dealer replace my fuel tank breather pipe which as so many after a number of years was cracking on the top. So had it replaced to prevent it from potentially developing a leak. All good until this weekend, I filled up the tank until the first click, drove 10 km, and then put it back in the garage. Two days later I saw a small dark wettish spot on the concrete, wiped it up and it had a distinct diesel smell. Checking the truck saw that a metallic support at the rear right hand side coming down from the fuel tank area was wet, and this also appeared to be diesel. With a flashlight could spot the fuel breather pipe valve above the tank, same as shown in the picture, and this valve looks also covered in shiny wet diesel. The tank itself, and the end of the breather pipe where connected to the tank seems entirely dry. So looks like this breather pipe, most likely at the valve, has developed a leak after just 25 months. Will be checked out next week, and hope it is just what I think it is, if so guess only option will be to again replace the entire pipe assembly by new. Question, the complete fuel tank breather pipe assembly has part number LR032394, is it correct that I think to have read recently on here that this breather pipe has been redesigned, and above part number is now superseded by a new version? New part number? And does the new version have the actual breather valve and the thin U-shaped bended plastic pipe in a different location now than before? Not anymore hidden above the 110's fuel tank, but just dangling unprotected in the wheel arch? Eric You never actually own a Defender. Tks Supacat, that was the thread I was looking for. Will see what the verdict will be next week, and what type of fuel breather pipe will eventually be installed now if the current one proves to be the cause of the leak.
Indeed strange to see the version in your pictures dangling in the open ready to be splashed with everything the wheel will throw up. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Judging by how clean that additional breather looks in comparison to the fuel filler pipe it is tie wrapped onto, I would guess that has been added at a later date. I cannot imagine that being a factory solution as a breather. With the motor running, it will be sucking air to compensate fuel drop, and suck in just everything in the wheel well..... 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

Which is why they relocated them so they terminated behind the plastic splash panel at the back of the wheel arch. Steve.

Click the link - it's supposed to be the revised arrangement from the factory following failure of the earlier one which seemed to have the valve actually lower than the high fuel level and consequently leaked. I think JLR have several versions of this arrangement over time but this was the last one on the production line - would be more than interested to see any photos from MY16 110s to see if they do actually mirror this arrangement or the main dealer fitted the kit wrong? |

Little update,
My dealer this morning put the SVX quickly on the lift, and yes, there is a leak at the little white valve of the thin bended pipe sitting on top of the fuel tank. Only two years old, I had it replaced in Jan 2014 as preventive maintenance. There is one in stock with JLR Switzerland, so will be replaced by a new one again later this week. Will keep you posted if it still is the same version, or whether it is that more recent set up with the thin piece of bended pipe and the valve just dangling in the wheel arch unprotected from the elements. Now, can confirm that this new type is the factory installed version, and not just for the last couple of months or so, but longer already. Know it because I checked a Defender here at the office which was produced in March or April 2015. Below is the picture of its breather pipe setup, and I do know that this is the original one it came with from new. Eric Click image to enlarge You never actually own a Defender. Good photo
Eric - I think you need to have a word with the owner and at least get the end zip tied up as high as it will go. As present ever time he re-fills the tank there's a good chance the backwash up the breather tube is also going up the vent pipe into the valve. The very end of the J tube already looks like it has diesel on it. |

I have had a similar problem with my 90, built Jul/Aug 2015. Only had around 8 tank fills so far, but recently noticed oily contamination on drive after fill ups, once whilst parked up hill, second time on flat. Filled today, came out from paying & noticed diesel dripping onto forecourt. Thin breather pipe was horizontal into wheel arch and appeared lower than top of tank. I have been able to hook the hockey stick end around the back of the main fuel pipe, but have also read elsewhere not to brim the tank ( never had thus issue with my older 110), so going to monitor, otherwise one for the warranty list. Keep it simple - poverty spec.

I guess if there are a fair few issues raised under warranty, JLR may look to mod it a further time.
I think it needs a further length of 7.9mm rubber pipe and a straight connector to move the valve to a better place. Just need to climb underneath to see where that better place is and it's too wet and cold to do now. |
