There are of course those that think that top speed is of primary importance. Why buy a Defender in the first place if that is the case, when for the same money something a damn sight faster and more aesthetically pleasing perhaps can be had? Bit like a juvenile outlook of a penile extention.

I do agree with the speed thing, not needed with all the cameras about.. but i would love to try a remapped version. Our new work van is a 2.2 and it drives quite nicely, smooth and just a bit easier to go through the gears. But it stalls all the time at junctions... i am still getting used to it.
However, my 4.2 range rover classic would do well over the ton back in the day; and that stopped and behaved quite well. As it had the same underpinnings as the defender (isnt the defender a copy of the range rover running gear? axles, steering box etc)I don't see why it would be such a problem. My dads 1984 3.5 110 would max out at 96 with an uprated cam and 4 barrel carb, gave those germans on the autobahn a shock! 1953 80" 1987 mini city e 2011 90" |

I did once recently have a run in a stage 2 Puma and it was very strong in the low gears and smooth - no clunking effect. Sure it was much faster than standard, but at no time was I thinking top speed. What was clear though was the 'pull away' which was very impressive.
So I am certainly bought on the idea, but as others have recommended here it would be wise to wait until the warranty is dusted. 2015 Overfinch Defender XS 90 1998 50th Anniversary V8 1989 90 CSW Many Discoveries... |

The fact my Defender appeared not to have been built on a Friday, gave me good reliable service and had but a few minor warranty issues, I ended up biting the bullet and decided the urge and desire was too great so had it done at the two year point. Even then as my warranty was more 'paint and finish' related I had no issues claiming thereafter.
Time, reliability and the desire may eventually get the better of you too. Hope yours turns out to be as good as mine. ![]() Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Thanks K9. Will see how long it takes before the urge gets the better of me!
Mine was a Wednesday build (full of woe?!!), but since I've also had a warranty issue within the first 500 miles, probably best to hold out for awhile! 2015 Overfinch Defender XS 90 1998 50th Anniversary V8 1989 90 CSW Many Discoveries... |

So are the recorded mileage, any logged faults, mileage since last service etc stored somewhere else? I can't get my head around how you can run on one ECU, swap it for the service and the dealer doesn't notice when they plug in to read the OBD... ![]() . |

Any faults will be present in the ecu that was fitted to the car at the time of the fault, if the fault is a perminant fault as soon as any other ecu is fitted the same fault will be logged in the newly fitted ecu.
Mileage is stored in the instrument pack and transmitted on CAN to the rest of the car to be used for various things. The non fitted ecu can not store or remember anything if its not fitted to the car and SDD dealer tool does NOT read anything when plugged in or even have the capability to read deeper than the fault code menu on an ecu at the moment. |

Thanks - does that mean it's safe to leave the remapped ECU in place when going for a service because they can't even tell you've had the upgrade?

Would they not just need to drive it to feel the power gain if you left a tuned ecu on ?

In reality though it seems to me very few people get their Landies mapped whilst still under warranty, or at least until they feel they have a 'Gud 'un' and the warranty expiry date is in sight.
I get the reasons to do it and plan to do it when i can, but to risk voiding the warranty seems too big a risk - even swapping ecu's seems to have its risks. Just wish it wasn't so difficult dealing with LR in the first place! 2015 Overfinch Defender XS 90 1998 50th Anniversary V8 1989 90 CSW Many Discoveries... |

Had mine remapped and within 3 weeks received a 'Notice of Intended Prosecution' in the post for an alleged speeding offence in North Wales. Haven't previously had a speeding ticket for 25 years!
